FoodSaver FreshSaver Handheld Vacuum Sealing System

FoodSaver FSFRSH0051 FreshSaver Handheld Vacuum Sealing System, WhiteI've owned a Foodsaver for years (now on my third) so I'm familiar with their conventional vacuum bags and canisters.

I got an email from FoodSaver touting the new FreshSaver zipper bags for frequently used items so you don't have to keep cutting down and re-sealing regular FoodSaver bags.

Sounded good to me, so I ordered one.The handheld unit vacuums reasonably quickly, and the small compatible storage containers work well.

However, the quart and gallon size bags zipper are worse than useless. They appear to hold a vacuum initially, so you put it in the fridge only to find the next day that the bag lost its vacuum. The bags are stiffer than regular zipper bags, so when the seal fails, the bag expands and allows more air in than a regular plastic bag.The unit was supplied with 5 quart bags and 5 gallon bags.Only four bags held a vacuum more than a few minutes! Of those four, only two bags held vacuum a second time.Even those two failed on the third use.

Absolutely maddening you THINK you sealed the bag, only to find out hours later it isn't sealed after all!

I called Jarden (Foodsaver's corporate owner) to complain. They said the only thing they could do is send me a box of 12 gallon-size zipper FreshSaver bags as a 'goodwill' gesture.Unfortunately, those bags are just as bad as the first ones. The problem is the valve tab.The bags feature heat-welded multilayer construction (good) and heat-welded zippers (good), but the valve tab is fastened using a pressure sensitive adhesive like 'scotch' tape (BAD).The tabs fail, either by leaking when the tab comes loose, or when the tab doesn't stay sealed around the pinhole in the bag under the tab.As a test, I vacuumed a bag and immediately covered the tab with a square of clear 3M box sealing tape, and then the vacuum holds!Unfortunately, when you remove the tape, the vacuum tab peels off too, so that isn't a fix, but confirms the source of the failure.

Absolutely worthless design!Customer reps at Jarden aren't able to help they just want to sell you more stuff.(Too bad for you if what they just sold you doesn't work like they promise!)

I love the idea, but the bags are too annoying to bother with.I consider this a wasted purchase.

P.S. Some here have commented/suggested that I must have used the bags with wet/greasy foods that undermine the seal.(I learned that lesson 15+ years ago with standard Foodsaver.) I've used the Freshsaver with hard, dry cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano) and made sure the tab stayed flat, but still have leaks.I'm glad there are those who have had no problems, but that makes me wonder if Foodsaver has poor quality control on the Freshsaver bags, some work, some don't?As for me, I'm back to using the regular Foodsaver bags since they work very well.

I saw this on the shelf when I was buying some new bags for my big old foodsaver vacuum system.I thought this was a great idea. And at $20, what a deal!I did scoff a bit at the price of the special ziploc bags you had to buy, but I still thought it was worth a try.

If I only ever used this for lunchmeat and cheese, I would still be SO happy with this investment. These are two items that always go bad before we use it all, and that I am never going to pull out my big old foodsaver vacuum and bags every time I open them up.

I transferred mybag of salami and bag of sliced cheese into the special fresh saver ziplocs and it has just been awesome. It only takes a couple of extra seconds to grab the freshsaver and seal those bags up tight each time you get into them.My meat and cheese looks like the package has never been opened several weeks later.I couldn't be happier.

I know I will end up using this for a lot more down the road...but I couldn't let this great product continue to sit up here with no reviews. It is just excellent. It is great for items that you access a lot that are a hassle to deal with the traditional food saver system on.Or if you can't afford to invest in the bigger system.I highly recommend it.The only downside is the bags are pricey, but again, these bags get opened an resealed a lot, they last a long time...and you could probably wash and reuse them a few times if you were so inclined.

UPDATE 1/14/10:I will add that I have seen some comments about the seals failing and not working. The only time I have had this problem is if I have sealed and resealed the same bag more than say 15 times or so.Also, you can have failure of the seal if the product inside is very greasy or moist, to the extent that grease or liquid gets sucked up through the seal when sealing...than can compromise it.If not those cases, I have never had a bag fail on me.I still highly recommend this product. And I saw your latest commercial Food Saver people. How about sending me some love?

I only use this with the mason jar attachments. It is not intended for that, and FoodSaver will tell you the two are not compatible.I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a vacuum sealer just to use the jar attachment pieces, so I gambled that the cheap handheld unit would work, or I could make it work.I didn't even have to buy a hose to connect the two parts, but you can if you want.I just put the handheld unit over the hole in the mason jar attachment, push down and turn it on.It sucks the air out of the jar just fine without a hose piece.

A tip on mason jars in the fridge and freezer:put thick rubber bands on them. They absorb the shock if you accidentally clang them together. They can be touchy when cold.

Purchased the FoodSaver® FreshSaver® Handheld Vacuum Sealing System from Wal-Mart about 6 months ago along with 3 boxes of quart sized bags to go with it.The handheld unit works just fine, sucking out the air out of the bags like it is designed to do.But the failure of the system is the bags. The consistanly failed to maintain the vacuum status that they are designed to do.

After about 2-3 days, air is back in the bags. This is just not with the sample bags that came with the unit, it is also with the bags that are new in sealed up boxes fresh off the shelf. So I have lodged my complaint with FoodSaver over my loss of $45.00 not that I am expecting anything to come of this, but perspective buyers need to be aware of the failure.

Two days ago I purchased from the very same Wal-Mart, Ziploc's version of the system. It is a manual pump made out of cheep plastic for less than $3.00.Guess what folks, it works and the bag is still maintaining its vacuum on the product that I have placed inside. So a $3.00 product beats out a $19.95 product that is way more complicated.

The Freshsaver unit does make a very nice paperweight through.

I first bought a Zip lock vacuum system and while I was pleased with it the hand pump often took 30 to 40 pumps to create the vacuum in a gallon bag even when evacuating most of air before sealing. This unit works with both the Zip lock bags and the Food saver bags and containers. And I have the hand pump from Zip lock to use if charge is down on this unit. You should note that instructions provide that you should charge for 24 hours before first use. Also I note some reviews comment about vacuum not holding and I find that I often have to double check the seal to be sure it is holding and occasionally will have to remove air after having been in freezer or refrigerator for a while. So it is not perfect but still far better than using non vacuum bags or containers.

I bought both Zip lock and this system and some Food Saver containers for my son and daughter after having used for a while. My daughter was concerned about BPA and I was pleased to note that both Zip lock and Food Saver websites say that all their products are BPA free.

A tip:The bags from Ziplock or Foodsaver are far more expensive than regular bags so what I have done is use cheaper zip lock bags that I do not seal.I put those inside the vacuum bags, especially for meat and other items that would require disposal of a bag after use.I turn the unsealed bags with flap facing up (so no dripping from meat). This way I can use the vacuum bags over and over again at a considerable savings. My experience is that this has kept food fresher much longer than in unsealed containers and will likely pay for itself in food saved. I tried with bag of salad from Sams that usually spoiled in less than a week if not used in 5 days or so.Kept it fresh for nearly two weeks.

6' Scale Inhibitor & Carbon Filter w/ 1/4'QC Straight ConnectionWhen they call this filter a "scale inhibitor," they use the term "inhibitor" with the same liberality that Catholics deem the rhythm method as reliable birth control. In other words, don't expect much scale to be inhibited.

This filter is ultra affordable and easy to use. Worth the money!

I was supposed to use a different brand, but when I seen this one I thought is give it a shit. Glad I did!

The fridge is fine, but NO customer service. The first one leaked freon from the moment it was plugged in. They finally replaced it.... but what a nightmare!Their people are unhelpful, do not return messages, and give you zero support. When they finally shipped the replacement, I couldn't understand why it was WEEKS late. Finally I tracked it down -first, they'd shipped it late, second, they hadn't bothered to tell me when it was being shipped, and finally -I love this part, since it'sa snapshot of the whole process --even when I got ahold of them, they never told me that it was a special delivery and UPS would hang onto it until I called them and arranged a special delivery. I tried to complain, the service dept wouldn't take my calls, even the President refused to take calls. If you have any choice, don't do business with Avanti -decent products, terrible service and treatment of customers.

ADDENDUMSo, it's now 3 months since the replacement arrived and this one is going bad too. Apparently the fan is shot. Just not quality products. My advice is spend the extra and buy from one of the better manufacturers.

Buy it, enjoy it, pray it never needs service.Because if you ever need a part, more than likely, you are going to be flat out of luck.

I have a 35-bottle Avanti cooler that is a few years old.The thermostat went out on it.I called Avanti.

Them: That unit has been discontinued.

Me: OK, how do I go about getting a replacement thermostat?

Them: That unit has been discontinued.

Me: Can you recommend an appliance parts store that may have a replacement thermostat?

Them: No.

Hoping that I had just had the bad luck to have drawn a service rep who was having a bad day, I called again later.Same story.

I spent hours searching the Internet for a replacement part.No luck there, either.

So, buy it, enjoy it, and pray you never need service.

We bought the wine cooler to replace a trash compactor that we never used. It's not quiet (quite noticable when it's running) but I can live with that. What annoys me is that when the power goes out (happens a lot in Houston) the cooler resets to factory defaults, ignoring any temperature you set and forgetting other settings like Celcius versus Fahrenhiet.Since I use it to store red wine this results in the wine being much colder than it should be.For this reason I cannot recommend this product to anyone serious about red wine.

I purchased this model to replace a trash compactor in my kitchen during a remodel 2 years ago. When the cooler was first installed, it was kind of loud, but not too bad. Over time the motor has gotten measurably louder. Now, when it kicks on, it sounds like a garbage disposal.I've turned it off and am looking to replace it as soon as possible.I cannot recommend this unit.

We ordered and installed this wine chiller six months ago and we are greatly enjoying it.My only wish is that there was a way to lock the controls. They are so sensitive, that any random touch can change the settings, and even turn the unit off.Other than that, it is a great little built in unit.

I'm not sure if the one I received was defective or not but it would not hold its temperature.I only drink red wine so I needed it to be at 65 all the time. The ONLY time it stayed at 65 is when I had the heat running in my house at 70, otherwise it was always at the temp within my home (which completely defeats the purpose.) I didn't need a pretty storage box.I've seen much better units than this.It was a complete waste of money and I'm sending it back.

I agree, this productr sucks! Mine (bought new) has NEVER worked as it should and after unplugging it last week to use my blender in the outlet, it has STOPPPED WORKING ALTOGETHER since I plugged it back in. Prior to that, out of the box, I could never get it to chill below 56 degreess!! I hate it!!

I'm not too big on wine collection, but do like to have my wines at perfect temperature when I have friends or family over... I live in a small apartment and this was just the perfect size and shape for it...

It keeps wines at the temperature you want it (sometime it fluctuates by -1 degree), it has an interior light if you want to display it for your guests, and you set both temperature and light with a touch screen control...

I have received many compliments on it and the best part is that it is very silent!

Vinotemp VT-48TEDS Stainless Door with Black Wine Cabinet

Vinotemp VT-48TEDS Stainless Door with Black Wine Cabinet
  • Multiple temperature zones chill two types of wine
  • Ultra-quiet, vibration-free operation for noiseless storage
  • Energy-efficient thermoelectric cooling saves money and energy
  • Push button controls make operation easy
  • Interior light for added visibility

For the sake of disclosure, we have the VT-32TEDS (not the 48) but they are essentially the same thing.

The positives:It looks great, matches our kitchen perfectly and fits under an oddly sized counter, which is about 3/4" too short for just about every other manufacturer. It also runs quietly, most of the time.

The negatives:Our cooler arrived rather unceremoniously in the middle of our lawn, oddly several feet off the path that leads to the door.I don't necessarily blame Vinotemp or Amazon for this, but is was an omen of things to come.

After hauling it into the kitchen, I noticed that it had a large dent in the back corner, so I call Vinotemp customer service. They said that because their products are securely packed (in a cardboard box w/o styrofoam padding) that the dent must have happened while we were installing it.They did give me the option of shipping it back to them, at my cost, so that they could take a look at it but not guarantee a replacement.Since the dent was in back corner, I decided to just suck it up.

As I moved it into place, I also noticed that the doors were poorly hung and lopsided by almost 1/4".My door fun continued as I went to attach the handles, only to find out that the screw holes were drilled almost a full inch off.Vinotemp agreed to send out new handles, but couldn't do anything about the doors being uneven.

Now I'm about 6 months in and the thermometer on the right side goes out, so rather than displaying the temperature, it continually flashed "LO".Again, customer service couldn't do anything, although one guy suggested that I buy a digital BBQ thermometer and just keep it in one of the wine slots.Since we aren't using this to age great wines and the right side was still some indeterminate level of cold, I once again decided to suck it up.

Somewhere around this time we also started having problems with ice build-up, which would rub against the fans causing them to squeal loudly and I think would eventually stop the fans and kill the motors. We figured out a method to defrost it, but it involves unloading the whole thing, hot water, bicycle water bottles and a lot of towels.Expect to do this 2-3 times a year.I realize that it is a fridge, but this seems a bit excessive.

Most recently, one of the control boards in the back went out, making a really annoying repeated buzzing sound and leaving one side at room temperature. They do sell replacements for this, but in now expected fashion, this was a problem as well. After calling to place the order & give them my CC#, they said that they would confirm the order via e-mail and then send it out.No e-mail, but they called the next day and confirmed the order with my wife.2 weeks later no part. After I called again, they realized that they forgot to e-mail me the form that they needed signed & faxed (yes, faxed) back so that they could reconfirm and process the order.A week and a half later, I readied myself for my repair project, removed the back panel, but then quickly found out that they had sent the wrong part.Mistakes happen, so I e-mailed the customer service rep, explained the problem and asked if they could send out the correct part. She told me that I would need to call customer service and gave me the number to call.I called customer service, heard a familiar voice, and after checking the phone number in the e-mail, I confirmed that I was talking to the same person I had e-mailed 30 minutes prior. So, after repeating my story, effectively reading my original e-mail, she put me on hold... for 10 or 15 minutes. After all that I was rewarded with the knowledge that the part was on back order and that they would probably send it out in 2-4 weeks.

Given the numerous problems I have had with the product itself combined with the company and its employees, I couldn't recommend this to anyone that I didn't really dislike. This is really a poor product, wrapped in a pretty exterior, so it is a bad choice unless they were dressing a set or staging a house and don't need it to actually work for any length of time.Sorry Vinotemp, I really wanted to like it.

When I first received this unit I thought it was exactly what I wanted for my small but relatively pricey collection. It has dual temperature controls and was quiet enough to besituated in a guest bedroom.I am also not in this home for about 6 months a year and it was important to keep the temperature of the wine from fluctuating. It served my purposes for 13 months. One side complete broke down and the other side lost its readout numbers. Imagine my chagrin was toldthat it would cost between $300 and $400 to repair. I only paid $549 foritso I was advised by the repairman to junk it and purchase either a very cheap one (knowing it would only last a few years) or to invest ina very expensive one. Apparently those in the middle are not worth it. For the moment I will use the Vinotemp until the second side quits and then decide.

Accordingly, I would not recommend this item to anyone. You are just throwing money away.

Have the unit in my living area, really quiet.Holds enough wine and in two temps which is a nice feature. Wood shelves hold all the different bottles I have. I shopped around for several weeks before buying and very pleased.

The LG main board was exactly has advertised. We were also very pleased with the delivery time.Buying the board from Amazon cost us about $100.00 less than going through a major parts place and half as much as buying it from the appliance repair company that came out and diagnosed the problem. All in all, 30 min of searching saved us about $150.00.The part has been in place for over a month now, and, so far so good, though i've no reason to suspect the part will not work great for years.

Hello Kitty 0.7 Cubic Feet 700 Watt Microwave - MW-07009

Hello Kitty 0.7 Cubic Feet 700 Watt Microwave - MW-07009This is the second HK microwave that I received because the first one died. This one caught on fire! BEWARE!!!

My girlfriend and I needed a microwave. This one is pink. It's also Hello Kitty. That's the only reason we own it because she wouldn't let me get anything else (cue whipping sound). It's the worst microwave I've ever used. The 1-9 buttons stand for 1-9 minutes of cook time and the start button adds 30 seconds. Specific second intervals cannot be used. When done, a loud and annoying beeping noise to signal it being finished is repeated five whole times and cannot be canceled unless you stop the microwave prior to finishing. After just a couple weeks, the clock becomes a few minutes fast and has to be adjusted constantly. The cooking process itself seems weak on full power and everything about the construction feels cheap. It just reeks of being a Hello Kitty money magnet first and an actual microwave last (big suprise!). It gets 2 stars because it looks nice in the pink themed kitchen we have and it makes my girlfriend happy. We bought it on sale at Target for $40. Do not spend $100 on this if you are looking for a half decent operational microwave.
