Sundanzer Solar-Powered Freezer - 8.1 Cubic Ft

Sundanzer Solar-Powered Freezer - 8.1 Cubic Ft
  • Requires 215 Watt solar panel, 300 Ah battery and 15 Amp charge controller
  • Ideal for off-grid solar homes or applications where grid electricity is not readily available
  • Uses environmentally-friendly CFC-free refrigerant
  • Includes baskets for food organization

Installed this unit about 2 years ago in southern Michigan so it's been through two winters now. My installation is powered by 300 watts of solar panels, which is more than needed but I don't have a good sunny spot in the back yard.Unit is operated at 24 volts using four 6-volt golf cart batteries in series that were purchased from Sams Club. A cheap charge controller was bought on eBay.This combination works fine but the freezer does not keep things as cold as a normal freezer. It stays around 15 degrees F, which I monitor with one of those cheap indoor/outdoor wireless temperature gauges from ABC Warehouse. This temperature is measured near the top of the freezer so should be about the warmest spot. I tried using 130 watts of solar panels and it did not do the trick maybe if I cut a tree or two and adjusted the panel vertical angle seasonally it would work with the 130 watts?

11/29/12 Update

Recently the freezer's control unit died and freezer would not work at all.I contacted Sundanzer (915-821-0042) and spoke with "Billy". He was very helpful and, even thought the freezer is out of warranty, he shipped me a replacement controller at no cost. Replacement was easy and the freezer is now functional again. I did learn that Sundanzer has gone to a different manufacturer for the controller (and compressor?).The controller in my unit was made by ACC in Italy. I'm not sure what kind of service I will receive in the future as it is my understanding that Sundanzer no longer uses this manufacturer. The controller Billy sent me was one of only six they had in stock and they were not able to test it before sending it do me. Billy attempted to test it with the only compressor they had in stock that was compatible with the ACC controller, and none of the six controllers they had in stock wouldwork with that compressor. Thus it would appear that the only compatible compressor Sundanzer had in stock was defective. I also asked Billy if there was some way to make my freezer operate at a lower temperature and he responded that he would also send me the "ice cream thermostat" for my freezer.Again, replacement was a snap but it did not seem to make much of a difference in the freezer's temperature.I concluded that I probably did not have enough solar panels to keep my 24 volt battery fully charged and added another 124 watts of solar panels, making a total of 424 watts in panel output. The freezer now maintains a temperature consistently around 2 degrees F toward the top of the unit and a degree or two lower at the bottom. mkwalker16@hotmail.com

Maytag MFI2269VEW Ice2O 22 Cu. Ft. White French Door Refrigerator - Energy Star</noscript

Maytag MFI2269VEW Ice2O 22 Cu. Ft. White French Door Refrigerator - Energy Star
  • Beverage Chiller Compartment
  • Wide-N-Fresh Deli Drawer
  • Spill-Catcher Glass Shelves
  • 21.8 Cu. Ft. Total Capacity
  • Fits a 33-inch Opening

The Maytag matches very well our other newer Bisque appliances so that is a plus.

It has about the same space as our older replaced Jennaire Side by Side 33 inch width one. Maytag : MFI2269VEQ 33in Bottom Freezer Freestanding Refrigerator Bisque

To fit this new one in we had to shorten the height of a cabinet above it but expected to do it for most newer refrigerators. Also it being deeper than our side by side we decided to reduce the back free-standing wall and got an extra 3.5 inches, which was most welcome. So it barely stands out no more than an inch than our side by side one.

In general it has worked very well for the week or so we have had it.

It produces enough ice for a family of three. We like two gallons of milk can fit on the door and easier access for our child to get snacks. It seems very well lit considering our Jennaire was a very well lit model also.I think it will do even better as it has more glass to let light through. It is one of the most energy efficient models in the French Door style we could buy even with the Ice in the Door front dispensor.

We got it from a Big Box store for a fair price that included free delivery and removal of the older one. They also offered a 10% Energy Rebate that helped the price for us even more!(considering we had to do some minor remodeling to get it to fit into the wall better).

The only real complaint is we wished it had an option for an Egg Tray that would fit into the Door's Dairy area!We may make our own one by cutting a nice one we have been using!Or just put 6 eggs in a large silicon ice tray since it is not yet offered.CS replied few of Maytags new refrigerators offer/include an Egg Tray.

It balanced fairly easily unlike our previous model. So over all we like it but do have to adjust to the ice in door taking up room in the top tray area but do fit a few items underneath it.Our last model did not and probably could not have the Ice in the Door so now we do have that option and like it at our currently 33 inch width.

I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Whynter BWR-281DZ Dual Zone Built-In Wine Refrigerator, 28-Bottle

Whynter BWR-281DZ Dual Zone Built-In Wine Refrigerator, 28-BottleAs a previous Viking wine fridge owner, I've been spoiled. I wasn't expecting anything close given the fraction of the cost.I was duly pleased by what I got in this dual zone wine fridge.

The wine fridge shipped via freight which was a nice surprise.I would not have enjoyed receiving this delivery if had to get beat up by UPS package delivery.Scheduling the delivery ahead of time was also way more convenient than getting that annoying door tag when you miss the delivery. So it was off to a good start.

Packaging was plain but sturdy enough for the item.Handle bar had to be installed and was easy enough. Nice handle bar actually. Easy to grip with no sharp corners. The shelving is very very nice. It's wood trimmed metal shelving, which actually gives it more space in the interior. The shelves are fully removeable and I'm actually no using the bottom most shelf. I store my larger bottle on the bottom. Storage0wise it fits 28 750ml bottles with no problems. I'm actually surprised I a 15" dual zone unit could fit that many bottles. If you want to put larger bottles, just remove the bottom most shelf on either

The actual installation was easy enough and I actually had this put into my library/bar room.Fits well and appears to be ADA compliant with the height, not something I was specifically looking for but was fine with me.The lighting is very sleek. Never realized white LED lighting could look this fancy. Each zone has it's one lighting to it's adequately illuminated.Controls are easy enough and the display is fairly true to actuals based on some basic comparison I did with an oven thermometer. Both zones are pretty distinct and good at keeping their own set temps. The unit itself also runs fairly quiet. I do use the room as a study at times and have not noticed it running in the background. I did catch it cycling once, but it's for the most part subtle.Forgot to mention that the lock on the unit itself was a plus especially with teenagers in the house! The one negative I had was the clarity of the temperature display, slightly difficult to read in lowlight situations.

This is actually a interestingly premium type wine refrigerator that may not have every single refinement of your top end fridges but is certainly not lacking in style and performance. Given the relative price, this is actually a really decent buy.

They may say 28 bottles, but the fine print is that they must be skinny bottles. Stack 3 one way and 2 the other for 5 racks and three on the bottom. Forgetta about it. I took the bottles I already have and was able to get three per rack for 5 racks and 3 more on the bottom. Expect to fit 18 bottles. Plus it was cramped. Some of the bottles were fat on the bottom and they barely fit vertically. The dual zone has the higher temperature in the upper zone and the lower zone for lower temperatures. So if you want to store red wine, you'll get to store 6 bottles in the upper zone. I was hoping to store more red than white. I'm probably going to stay with the highest temperature on the lower zone and similar temperature on the upper zone so really the dual zone didn't work for me. I'm going to make it low end for red and high end for white so basically it will be a one zone cooler. I must say, Amazon said I would get it on such and such a day at such and such a time and it did. That was impressive to me. It does have a bit of a hum to it, but maybe it's just because it's getting to the correct temperature. I was hoping for more quiet.

Vinotemp VT-18TEDS Thermo-Electric Digital 18-Bottle Wine Chiller, Black and Stainless

Vinotemp VT-18TEDS Thermo-Electric Digital 18-Bottle Wine Chiller, Black and Stainless
  • Freestanding digital wine chiller keeps up to 18 bottles properly chilled
  • Thermo-electric cooling system protects wine from unnecessary vibration
  • Ultra-quiet operation; does not use ozone-depleting chemicals
  • Energy-efficient dual-paned glass door; 5 pull-out shelves included
  • Measures 21-1/2 by 14 by 25-1/2 inches; 1-year limited warranty

I've had this unit for about 3 weeks and it's running quite well. It arrived quickly and undamaged. Packing could have been better but since it arrived OK, no problem. It fits 18 normal wine bottles (750ml). It's quite quiet (certainly less noisy than the Cusinart I had). Temperature is adjustable and accurate. Obviously it allows for one temperature, so if you like your white wines chilled you'll probably have to move it to the fridge and hour before you open the bottle.

Overall I'm very happy with this unit. We called a wine store for a recommendation and this is the manufacturer he recommended.

Pros: Looks nice, easy interface, temperature control is pretty quick. The other review is right, the packaging is very good.

Cons: The big con is that this unit will NOT fit all 750ml bottles adequately. I bought a long-necked bottle of Riesling...it's an inch too long to fit! I had to lay it diagonally across the bottom tray, taking up 3 spaces. I bought a wide 750ml bottle of Pinot, and a bottle of port..they're too wide to fit the middle racks. I have to stick them in the top rack. Ok, I understand it's not meant to hold 18 port bottles but you'd figure that the rest of the wider red bottles should fit. But no. Even some other moderately-wide 750ml bottles seem to have trouble fitting into the middle racks.

If the unit was just a little a couple inches taller and deeper to accommodate more 750ml bottle shapes, it would be a great device. As is, expect to fit about ~15 bottles, and have some squeezing/rearranging issues.

Purchased this wine cooler in November '10, stopped working in July '11. When i first began using it, it took awhile to get down the to proper temperature something like 3 days. But once it did, it was fine. However, when summer came along the unit couldn't get the temp below 65 degrees, sometimes struggling at 68-69 degrees. After about a week in the high sixties, the temp shot up to 80 degrees, even though the temperature of the room was in the mid 70s. Warranty is 90 days, so I now have to purchase a replacement cooling system for $50 i hope the service instructions are good.

Poor quality, I would look elsewhere.

They sent the wrong cooling system first, then when the correct unit came, it did not work. This whole experience from the product to the service has been a joke.

We wanted a unit that could hold a sufficient number of bottles of wine with out taking up too much space and that doesn't generate a lot of heat or noise. This Vinotemp 18-bottle unit fills all of the above. It fits neatly into a space behind our wet bar and is very quiet. We are very pleased with it and the speed of shipment.

SEE the UPDATE at the bottom of this review.

I've owned this fridge for three months now, and for the price, it hasperformed reasonably well--so far. When you add together the price and the shipping rates, you probably won't be able to find a cheaper thermoelectric wine fridge with this storage capacity. (I consider the non-vibrating feature of thermoelectric fridges an important requirement for cellaring wine long term.) However, there are some definite deficiencies and one really big question mark about long-term performance.

As my wine collection has grown, I've purchased several wine fridges from different manufacturers. Of the four wine fridges I now own, this one has the cheapest look and feel. Yes, it looks quite attractive from a distance, but when you get up close, you notice that every element of its construction seems just a little (and sometimes a lot) flimsier than my other fridges. For example, the material used for the inside walls of this fridge looks and feels like extremely thin plastic that could easily crack or be punctured. (The plastic liner seems comparable in weight and thickness to the thin plastic that is often used for packagaing small electronics accessories like headphones or video cables.) This plastic inside wall liner will probably hold up just fine if treated gently, but it seems like a clue to overall quality.

Similarly, the chrome trays that hold the bottles are just a little thinner, lighter, and flimsier than those in my other wine fridges. Speaking of the trays, with a tray loaded with bottles, you are supposed to be able to pull it out a few inches to get easier access to the bottles and a better view of the label. But the trays on this fridge do not slide smoothly once they are loaded with wine. Instead, they snag and get hung up. In fact, I worry that the force required to unstick and pull out a tray with bottles on it either might cause the bottles to come flying out on onto the floor or might tear the thin plastic that lines the inside walls of the fridge. So to get a tray out safely, you have to remove the bottles first, which defeats the purpose of having trays that are supposed to slide partway out for easier viewing and access.

With gentle and careful use, you can probably avoid problems with the flimsy physical construction of this fridge; however, the thing that worries me most about this fridge is the long-term endurance of the thermoelectric cooling device. This fridge sits side-by-side with another fridge I own that was made by another manufacturer and has exactly the same storage capacity. Compared to the other manufacturer's fridge, the AW fridge's cooling device kicks on and runs more often and longer--probably more than twice as long--to maintain the same temperature. With the temp set at 55 degrees, this fridge's cooling system runs almost non-stop, never shutting off for more than just a few minutes before kicking back on for another long stretch, and that's what makes me worry about long term durability. Because of my concern about the cooling device running constantly, I've raised the temp setting from 55 to 58 degrees, and that seems to help somewhat, but this thermoelectric fridge's cooling device still runs much more often andmuch longer with the setting at 58 degrees than my other same-size thermoelectric fridge does at 55. It only makes sense that the more often the cooling device kicks on, and the longer it runs, the shorter will be its working lifespan.

One last word to the wise: For those who are just starting to appreciate the pleasures and advantages of cellaring your own wine, maybe it makes sense to buy a small cheap "starter" unit until you can decide whether your wine bug is a temporary infection, a manageable illness, or a lifelong obsession. But before doing as I did--buying a second, and then a third, and then a fourth fairly small fridge--consider taking the money you'd spend on a bunch of small fridges and instead putting those dollars into the cost of one higher quality, higher capacity unit that will solve your wine-storage needs over the long haul. Better yet, find 25 or 30 cubic feet of space under the stairs or in a closet of your house, wall it off, put in racks, insulate it, and buy a cooling unit to refrigerate it, to make your own mini-cellar where you can easily store several hundred bottles.

The Bottom Line: This fridge seems like a fair deal for the price, but if I had it to do over, I think I'd be better off in the long haul spending just a little more for a probably more durable fridge of the same size (which you can find on sale for not that much more), or putting the money into a much larger fridge or cellaring system that would better satisfy both present and future wine storage needs.

UPDATE: The original review above was written in July 2009, about three months after I purchased this wine frig in early April 2009. This update was written in mid-August 2010. Today my New Air 28 bottle wine frig died. It lasted about 16 months. To reflect the short life span, I've deducted a star, reducing my rating to two stars. This unit never was able to get down to 55 degrees. The coldest it could do was 60 or 61. So to keep the unit from overworking itself, I set the temp to 60, instead of 55. Two of my three comparable Wine Enthusiast branded units are still running. One of my three WineEnth branded units has also died, so the fact is, none of these thermo-electric units can be expected to last very long. As stated in my original review above, rather of buying one or more of these cheapie units, I would recommend putting that money into a better product that will hold more bottles, or better yet, build your own mini-cellar in closet or under a stairway.

Let's talk about the pros and cons of this Thermoelectric Wine Cooler so you know what to expect. On the plus sideLook and Price. This cooler looks really good, especially when you turn on the small blue LED light which envelopes the interior. And the price is inexpensive in the world of thermoelectric coolers. On the con side-Function.First, it definitely is not "silent" but hums at a level that your brain will quickly assign to "background" noise.Secondly, a digital temperature readout provides a sense of satisfaction that your vino is comfortably cool. However, don't mistake this with the actual temperature inside, which will fluctuate as high as 10 degrees above readout as evidenced by an internal thermometer we placed inside. To summarize,if looks are more important to you than substance or you just need something to keep a chill on your favorite table wines, this bling is for you.Expensive wine needs another home.

Quick update as of June 6, 2011 this little gem has literally achieved room temperature. No parts available anywhere to fix the temperature control board. So, it lasted less than 2 years and I don't think I would recommend anyone purchase this unit, unless you're a big fan of planned obsolescence.

I bought two of these, one for Reds, one for Whites. While they ran, they were very quiet and cooled just fine. However, both of them died completely after the 1 year warranty expired, but within 2 years, basically around 15 months and 18 months respectively.Air and Water said the best they would do is sell me replacement parts.

Also note, if you lose power or unplug these, they reset to the coldest temp setting possible. No memory for what temp you set them to.

These are the cheapest coolers, per bottle of storage, on the market but at the expense of reliability.I won't be buying these again, or from Air and Water.

This is the worst refrigerator I've ever owned. As another reviewer mentioned, the fan runs constantly, even when the set temperature is reached. And it won't go below 54F under any conditions, so it's really limited in what it can store. The holes in the door frame don't line up with the holes in the door glass, so the door pull can't be installed. The interior is plastic, and the shelves only pull out about half-way before they start to fall out of the slots in the walls--no bearings, no draws, just a slot.

And it's loud! I think I'd prefer a standard compressor-based unit (vibration problems aside); I've had cheap student dorm-room refrigerators that were quieter.

The kicker is that the cost to return it via UPS is almost as much as the refund would be, so it's probably not worth it.

Lesson learned--don't buy single-sourced products that can't be tested first.

OK for shorter-term wine storage able to keep temp around 65F for the most part, when ambient temp is < 80F.

After 1 year, the fan and/or logic board died. So in computing price per bottle of storage, factor in amortization over 1-2 years tops, not 5-10 years that's typical for higher-quality wine cabinets.

AVOID PRODUCT

I ordered two of these filters to replace the Frigidaire filter that was supposed to expire in December.

Last week the replace light finally went on and I installed this filter.

Immediately I noticed a bad taste, much like a chlorinated pool, and it constantly produces water that has a huge amount of bubbles.

When I went to find out about a refund, I was told that it was past the time limit. I lost just over $40.00 on this transaction.

First: The filters ARE NOT GENUINE FRIGIDAIRE REPLACEMENTS. THEY ARE COPIES THAT ARE CHEAPLY MADE, TASTE AWFUL AND NOT WORTH 20 CENTS.

Second: IN MY OPINION THE SELLER IS GUILTY OF FRAUDULENTLY REPRESENTING THESE AS FRIGIDAIRE REPLACEMENT FILTERS.

Third: BEWARE, THERE ARE A LOT OF DEALERS SELLING "REPLACEMENT FILTERS" THAT ARE SUB-STANDARD LIKE THESE.

Fourth: Spend the extra bucks and buy the original replacement and AVOID BUYING THEM ON AMAZON if you are buying through the "marketplace" and not directly from Amazon as you will not be able to get a refund.
