The Water Sentinel WSS-1 is listed as "Replacees Samsung DA29-00003b". Well, that is close to correct, but not quite. The WSS-1 is slightly (about 1/2" or so) taller that the DA29. That little 1/2" doesn't seem like much until you try to insert the filter. In my Samsung refrigerator (freezer on the bottom, French doors, the top shelf on the right is not adjustable. It can be removed, but because of being supported by the icemaker, it has only one place it can go.
I removed the old filter, lubricated the new filter and reached in to insert it. The shelf was blocking it so that I could not get it inserted. I tried several angles. I was sure it would do in because i had just removed the old filter. Then I sat the old filter (a DA29-00003B) and the new filter side by side on the counter. The WSS-1 was just a bit taller than the DA29. It wasn't much ... but just enough.
I need to change the filter, so I emptied the shelf, removed it from the refrigerator, installed the filter, put everything back in, and closed the refrigerator so that the "door open" alarm would stop dinging at me.
The short of it is this filter is longer than the original manufacturer filter and that may make installation more difficult than expected. I will be going back to the DA29 filters.

It doesn't make huge amounts of ice, and the cubes are really small, but I don't have a large family so it isn't a problem for me.What is a problem is the way the left door closes.It is easy to have the mullion not go into it's channel, leaving the door open about an inch.It's true that it will beep after a minute or so, but if you grabbed your lunch out of the fridge on your way out the door, it will just beep all day and the fridge will be about 50 degrees on your return.Because I have never owned a french door fridge, I don't know if any other manufacturers have this problem.Could be a challenge for all of them.
I wouldn't recommend this fridge if you have children getting in and out of it for the above reason. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy this same model, even with the mullion problem.I just keep my lunch behind the right hand door now.

First of all, the good part: This fridge is a gorgeous piece of kitchenware.The stainless steel looks stunning next to my oak cabinets, and I've gotten quite a few compliments.However, it's functionality does not live up to its fabulous facade.
So, here are the bad parts:
The water dispenser is separate from and placed above the ice dispenser, so that the drip tray (even if extended) will not catch any excess water sloshed about.It also confuses anyone new to the fridge and you'll end with water all over your floor.We've started keeping water in pitchers when we host parties to prevent this.Still, we inevitably end up having to hand out towels to at least one unfortunate soul.
The ice maker is horrible.The ice cubes stick together constantly, so that you have to bang on it a bit.Plus, we've already had to call and get someone to come out and put in a new ice cube tray when ours got stuck mid-rotation and started making strange grinding noises.Keep in mind, this occurred about 4 weeks after we purchased the fridge.The repairman said it was something about the way the doors close that caused all the problems with the ice cube maker.He said we wouldn't have problems if we didn't open both the doors at once.However, to access the bottom produce drawer, you have to open both doors.
The freezer holds a lot less than our old GE fridge (which was comparably much smaller in size).I'm not quite sure why.
The fridge cools unequally (more so than any other fridge I've ever owned or heard of).I've found that the upper part of the refrigerator actually gets quite warm, and anything placed there will go bad rather quickly.I'm not talking about a bit more warm, but the sort of hot-to-warm temperature that will encourage even preserved foods to sour.If I lower the temperature of the refrigerator to the point where things will keep relatively well on those upper shelves, the vegetables and fruits in the bins at the bottom of the refrigerator freeze.
The energy saver temperatures kept my ice cream melty and made my squash go bad.
The stainless steel looks great, but you can see every fingerprint.It's also horrible to clean.Windex or water will leave streaks.You have to rub them off with a microfiber towel or get a special stainless steel cleaner.

I have owned this refrigerator for a couple of years now, and it has been wonderful. No trouble at all, keeps food very cold. I like the French Doors, very usable space.The interior is beautiful with the LED lighting. The Linear Compressor is very quiet and has a ten year warranty. Ice output is moderate, but I knew that going in. It is OK for my use. My old refer would freeze my eggs. This one has no problems like that. I can say without reservation that this is the best refrigerator that I have ever owned! I also own an LG Washer and Dryer and they have been working away trouble free for 5 years now. My LG Stove has also been great, some trouble with the capacitive touch control panel, but LG service replaced it with out a problem. For me anyway, I like all the LG appliances that I own and have no regrets about buying any of them. If I were only grading the refrigerator and freezer, this would have five stars. We seem to have much better temperature control than we had with our 6-year old side-by-side Kenmore. Our produce and deli meats seem to stay fresh longer. Our milk stays cold but does not freeze. Guess you can tell why we ditched the Kenmore!HOWEVER, the ice maker is slow and of low capacity. Perhaps four glasses of ice water is all you'll get at one time. If you don't use the ice maker for two or three days, the ice all sticks together and the dispenser won't dispense ice at all very annoying. Then you have to dump the ice container into the sink and start over.The water dispenser is even worse. While I appreciate the idea that this is supposed to make filling a pitcher possible, we get water on the floor all the time even family members that use it frequently. We also have a lot of guests, and when they use the water dispenser, we see a puddle on the floor 100% of the time, until they've used it three or four times.
The ice maker and water dispenser absolutely are completely annoying extremely poor design (water dispenser) and engineering (ice make and dispenser) so much so that this otherwise fine product may not last as long as the Kenmore in our home. One star for the ice maker/dispenser and water dispenser gets no stars at all.
As far as noise goes this unit is very quiet, except that it has a very low frequency, and noticable, hum. Four stars for noise.
Finally while the water filter seems to work really well, the price of the water filter is way out of line approximately $35. The manufacturing cost of this should be under $1 shame on LG for their pricing! One star for the filter price.

Replacement of the two optics boards took about five minutes: three screws on each side of the freezer compartment, disconnect and remove the optics panels, remove the screws holding the circuit boards in place (one on the left panel, two on the right panel), remove the circuit boards, and reassemble with the new boards by reversing the process.You can watch this step-by-step process online -just search on YouTube for the part number, 4389102.
The kit also supplies a wiring diagram and diagnostic instructions for the new circuit boards, and a suggestion where to save them in the base plate of the refrigerator along with the other diagrams stored there.
I have had this optics kit installed since June 29, 2012.The icemaker has been functioning like new since then.
So how do you know if you need to replace the optics?Do a diagnostic test:
Check that the icemaker on/off switch (right side of freezer compartment) is ON.Look at the red status light next to the on/off switch.You should see the flight flash twice and repeat the double-flash every second.Now close the left side flapper and don't block the light path from the right side where the red status light is.The red status light should stop flashing and come on steady. If it is still flashing, your optics may be blocked -or they might be bad, like mine were.You might want to wait 5 minutes then unplug the refrigerator for 10 seconds to reset the ice maker control board and try the diagnostic again.
If the light still won't come on steady, you can check the rest of the icemaker by bypassing the optics system.USE CAUTION, as the optics connections are live -unplug the refrigerator for safety while bypassing the system.First remove the right side optics panel (3 screws).Next, disconnect the cable plug from the refrigerator going to the optics panel.Now jump 2 specific connections on the refrigerator's plug (I cut a large paper clip and insulated the middle for this purpose).The correct 2 wires to jump are next to each other and may be identified by color: black, and black-with-white.Turns out my model used different colors, but I found online that the correct wires can be identified as the ones immediately below the bottom-most hole on the plug where no wire is connected (there are 4 wires next to each other filling up the rest of the plug below the hole).I found a description and photos of this bypass operation on the ApplianceJunk (Appliance Repair Help) website by Googling the three words: 4389102 jumper paperclip (4389102 is the part number of this optics kit).If the only thing wrong with your icemaker was the optics system, your icemaker will eventually make ice again (24 hours or less -mine took about 2 hours).Note: once the icemaker starts, it won't stop making ice while the jumper is in place, so don't let the icemaker keep going too long or it will overfill the bin and cause problems!

Installed on Kenmore branded whirlpool refrigerator. Symptom was slow to no ice production. Purchased thermometers first to check temperature which was fine. Dropped first ice about 10 minutes after installation. Installed a couple of weeks ago and has been working great, the ice bin is full. The original broken optics board was blinking twice, once second pause, repeat with no change blocking/unblocking the sensor. The original board would still make ice intermittently / erratically, though not enough to keep us in ice and we'd run out.

We've had this fridge about 1 month and it is very quiet and has presented no problems. It has cold water and ice in either crushed or cubed form. My son loves the crushed ice feature since it cools drinks down fast. My main beef about this refrigerator is that there is a lot of wasted space. It uses traditional light bulbs including bulbs behind the food (why???). The bulbs and their guards waste nearly 1 cu ft of space. The water is kept in a resivoir in the back of the refrigerator that prevents the shelves from going all the way to the backs: another cubic foot of space lost. The shelves have too wide reinforcement on the shelves that cause items to tip over and have a fancy curved front: I'd rather just have the shelves made to maximize storage! Anyway, they need to more efficiently make use of the interior space of the frige including using small, energy efficient leds.

Extremely disappointed at the cheap materials used for shelving.After getting my first real job after college, I bought my parents this fridge for Christmas after their freezer quit on them.Was looking forward to giving them a good 10 years or so with this new fridge (parents' previous fridge lasted 10+ years), but was sorely disappointed when after just 2 years, the plastic edges around the shelves began to crack.First, the shelves inside the door, then the rest of the shelves.Never have we had this problem with our previous refrigerators.Extremely disappointing.Warranty is only good for one year, so I guess it's too bad for us.
Don't be fooled by the nice-looking exterior and expensive price tag.This will be the last time I buy a Whirlpool anything.

The product works great. I dont have the water plugged in. On the first day it madelot of noise. Its fine now and havent done that.

Shipment is bad so be careful. It took a month to deliver the fridge. I am in west coast
and the fridge came all the way from east coast. The shippers didnt do a good job
coordinating the shipment. THey would bring the fridge to my door without calling me
first.
One con is its too high so make sure you check the measurements before you buy
which i forgot to do :) and ended up having to move it.

I bought a similar model to this, the ED5PVEXW model, the side by side with the ice and water dispenser.ONE WEEK after the year warranty they give you it stopped cooling.We had a repairman come out and he said that Whirlpool and Maytag refrigerators were notorious for burning out the compressors due to a defective component and that our compressor was extremely hot.He said many have even caught fire and ruined houses!Maytag, Whirlpool's sister company, has recalled many of their models for these fire hazards, but Whirlpool has ignored the issue for the most part, only recalling a few models. I called Lowe's, where I bought my refrigerator (and where a suprisingly large amount of the failed refrigerators were purchased, check consumeraffairs.com) and they said they couldn't help me, to call Whirlpool.Well, Whirlpool said they couldn't do anything because the warranty had expired. Before you buy a Whirlpool refrigerator be sure to check the internet review sites and read the horror stories!I will never buy another Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore appliance, and I will never again shop at Lowe's.

Con's
Like all of these thermoelectric systems, it runs continuously.No getting away from this particular design and my guess is all of the manufacturers use the same guts.Given that these are relatively inexpensive, they must save some money by not putting in a relay to actually shut down the unit when it reaches the proper temperature.There may be other reasons for not stopping the cooling and fan completely, but it is not obvious to this engineer why they wouldn't do so except costs for putting the fan on a separate circuit and to keep the fan running for air circulation.An extra few components would be required to separate the fan control from the thermoelectric cooler.The fan and cooling systems slow down significantly when they reach the proper temperature, but neither actually stops.Hence they are inefficient.
The unit itself is poorly calibrated.The unit I received runs 7 degrees hotter than indicated by the display.I set it initially at 65 degrees and it was actually running at 72 degrees. I didn't run a complete set of tests to see the variation.The temperature was calibrated against a Fluke 971.There is no method or adjustments on the board to adjust this calibration.You simply have to live with it.Also, this will limit the lower temperature range since it can't be set below it's rated temperature.
The unit cannot be kept in a cool room.Since the thermoelectric cooling unit runs continuously, if the room gets at or near the temperature set point, then the temperature in the unit will drift downward because the unit cannot shut off.For example, if the room temperature is 66 degrees, and the unit is set at 65 degrees, the temperature will actually drift down to around 59 degrees or so because the cooling system never shuts down.
So far, the unit has been reliable and quiet.Minimum of movable components (only two fans).I would recommend the unit, with the caveat that anyone purchasing this separately calibrate the unit.Also, if you need to run the unit at or near the lowest temperature settings, this would not be recommended due the significant difference between the settings and the actual temperature.

There are no controls for temperature calibration. Once powered, the unit only cools below ambient temperatures of the room. THe ambient temp in my house is 68F,the internal thermometer of the wine cooler registers at about 41F and does not deviate this despite re-setting to 55F. Plenty of room for Pinot and tall napa cab bottles. In the month since I own the cooler it began by cycling between the set temperature and one degree lower then after about two weeks it cycles between one and two degrees below the set temp. I suspect thermometer is not that accurate. It is all in the correct range for red wine and probably not that critical. It's quiet and unobtrusive. Overall a good value. We where looking forward to this wine cooler, we ordered with express shipping, 2-3 days, but the cooler never arrived. Amazon promptly refunded our money, but we never found out why we did not receive the cooler?
In the meantime I received a replacement part for our Vinotemp Cooler, their service dept. sucks, but the cooler works now, let's see for how long.

I bought this in anticipation of a concert at a popular outdoor venue near my house.Popped it in the freezer when it arrived. This was at least 1 week ahead of time! On the day of the concert, I put 2 CHILLED bottles of wine into the Packit.Less than 2 hours later we uncorked a cool bottle of wine.The 2nd bottle remained in the cooler for another 1.5 to 2 hours. This bottle was barely cool.The Packit barely kept the cool for 4 hours.That's a long way from the 10 hours promised!A huge let down!

I had to replace this filter because it froze up and cracked as some others have experienced.Like Jeff's Advice said, the inlet and outlet tubes are oriented 90 degrees from the original which meant that one tube had to be pulled out a little more.I don't understand a FSP part not being the same.I just needed the mounted housing and not the filter cup but it's probably best they are as a pair due to any manufacturing variances due to production dates.Overall, everything worked out as it should.The filter assembly was priced very reasonably and the shipping was fast as it arrived before the expected delivery date.I'm very satisfied and even more pleased with the savings from not having to call a repairman.This is an easy do-it-yourselfer.Thanks.The first thing I noticed was the inlet and outlet stubs are not oriented the same as the original. Not sure why the plastic filter assembly cracked in our Frigidaire refrigirator, but it did. With help from my son we found the replacement assembly on line and took about 8 minutes to remove & install the new housing. For less than $30.00 the system was repaired and operating again. This is a great replacement part that was easy and quick to install. Really nice to have ice and cold drinking water again.
