Haier HUM013EA 1-2/7-Cubic-Foot Compact Space-Saver Upright Freezer

Haier HUM013EA 1-2/7-Cubic-Foot Compact Space-Saver Upright Freezer
  • Compact upright freezer with 1-2/7-cubic-foot capacity holds up to 46 pounds of food, with running amps of 1.4A
  • Full-width coated wire shelf slides out for easy access or removes for storing taller items
  • Adjustable thermostat for customized temperature control; manual defrost system
  • Reversible door with recessed handle for convenient placement almost anywhere
  • Measures approximately 19-3/4 by 19-3/4 by 20-2/7 inches; 1-year limited warranty

I needed a small freezer for storing excess frozen blueberries from a bulk purchase so after researching different makes and models, I finally decided to purchase the Haier mini-freezer from Amazon. Amazon offered free shipping and the price of the unit was $20 cheaper than my local walmart and target. It was very good customer service for Fedex sending two employees to deliver the mini-freezer so it arrived in excellent condition even though the way the mini-freezer was packaged from Haier was the worst I've ever encountered. There was absolutely no foam or packing material to protect the unit and after cutting one plastic strap the card board box fell apart.

After inspecting the unit for damage, I found one small dent near the top-right of the freezer door (See the images that I've posted above). I proceeded to follow the instruction booklet and plugged it in. I filled the mini-ice tray (Included with the unit) with water and left it in the freezer. Two hours later I checked to make sure the unit was still working and noticed the water had already frozen so now I have mini-ice cubes ^_^

I thought it would be helpful to include the mini-freezers interior measurements for usable space: I've measured the freezers interior top half at 15 inches wide with a depth of 12 inches, while below the removable wire shelf the bottom half measures 15 inches wide with a depth of only 7 inches (Usable space is lost due to the units motor).

Pros-

The unit is very quiet.

It looks nice and the handle is built into the top of the door.

The hinge can be moved to the opposite side depending on which way you prefer the door to open.

It has a switch in the back which allows temperature adjustment from 1-7 (I have it set on 4).

It has a removable wire rack inside the freezer.

Cons-

Some of the space in the lower section of the freezer is lost to the units motor.

I'm very happy so far with my purchase and recommend this mini-freezer to anyone that needs a little additional freezer space, but keep in mind there is a high percentage chance it will arrive with a dent >_

Summit : FF1325SS 10.4 cu. ft. Counter-Depth Top-Freezer Refrigerator - Stainless Steel Doors
  • Adjustable Glass Shelves
  • Door Storage
  • Large Freezer Compartment
  • Interior Light
  • Fingerprint-Free Stainless Steel Doors: No Ice Maker

I purchased this fridge because I had a tiny kitchen. On a cu ft basis it is one of the most expensive fridges you can buy.I have redone 3 kitchens in the past 5 years, and have spent about $30,000 on appliances.I have never seen such poor quality. The MAIN problem is that the refrigerator slopes--the bottom is 2" further away from the wall than the top even after I adjust the legs as far into the cavity as possible--it looks like a s___ show.I called Mark Goldman (Summit customer service) to help solving the problem. First he claimed this was how the fridge was designed--the door should close slowly.I said it doesn't--it SLAMS shut. Then clearly demonstrating the design story was invalid, Mark told me I could build up my floor with shims!I said that was ridiculous for $1000 fridge (it's $300 extra for the icemaker). He said I needed proof there was a problem, so I sent an email with a photo of the slanted fridge and a photo of a 36" level on the floor to show it was level (i tried to paste photos here, but can't).Under pressure from the retailer, Summit sent a service rep.The service rep agreed the floor was level and the legs were into the cavity, so there was nothing he could do to fix the problem--that there was clearly a manufacturing or design flaw. When Summit received this information, they said since it wasn't a MANUFACTURING flaw (it was the design flaw--so ALL fridges will have the same problem), they weren't required to do anything about it.So I'm living with the problem.

As an aside, the rest of the quality is no better.the produce drawer is plastic and doesn't slide on the guides well, so soon it will break no matter how careful I am.

I relied heavily on reviews so wanted to leave one myself. Forget the model number but I got the bottom freezer, SS, icemaker, roughly 2'x6' in 2011. A lot of what I read was true: cheap drawers, after you close the frig door it gets sucked in for 10-15 seconds. Not a big deal as a 2nd unit but if it were in my main kitchen this (& the drawers perhaps) would get on my nerves at times (still if you had to have a small frig I think you can get used to it). I read where noise was a big issue. I've heard it come on but has never bothered me. If there were long spells where I was quiet in the same area then maybe; but so far I've barely noticed it. Also, very pleased w the interior space/shelf options for the room it takes up (again 2nd frig).

I've had it about 3-4 months and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems. Actually I love it since it fits perfectly and has everything I wanted: tall, thin, bottom freezer, icemaker AND counterdepth!...didn't think all that was possible. I was dubious from some negative reviews but after an exhaustive search Summit was the only brand that had all these things. If you're in the same situation then I say pull the trigger and buy it but try to work out some kind of insurance if it does fail on you or you don't like it for some reason. Good luck!

Whirlpool WRT359SFYF 18.9 Cu. Ft. Stainless Look Top Freezer Refrigerator - Energy Star

Whirlpool WRT359SFYF 18.9 Cu. Ft. Stainless Look Top Freezer Refrigerator - Energy StarOur entire family of adults have now poked our backs and/or heads, and on two occasions blood was drawn. The problem we had was with the enormous depth/ short height of the refrigerator box, low deep shelves, extra forward door thickness, PLUS THE VERY SHARP lower edges of the freezer door handle when the lower door is open. So while you bend down to reach in, you have to remember to stay low getting out -or else OUCH! and maybe blood. You're best to study the front-to-back dimension of this model carefully. If you're shorter than 5'-0", then it's no problem.

Aside from this, there's more noise than usual. There's occasional "metal dropping" noises. The shelves cannot place tall jars unless you take out one of the glass shelves. The plastic bottom skirt simply falls out upon the slightest bump because it's a cheap afterthought appearance thingie.

On the upside, the temperature seems very consistent in both compartments. We got a rebate from the utility company for the CEE Tier 3.

Now hoping that the energy savings over time is true.

This is an exact replacement motor for my Maytag Refrigerator, but note that the plug was not an exact fit.I had to cut the plug and make a wire to wire connection to the harness. No adaptors were provided.

Update:This motor continues to operate well over 30 days after installation. For the record it has a plug that might fit your Maytag... just don't count on it.My refrigerator model is MTB1956GEW.

Sundanzer Solar-Powered Chest Freezer - 5.8 Cubic Ft., 30in.L x 40in.W x 37in.H

I didn't really need a freezer.I just wanted to see if sunlight could really be turned into ice.My friend talked me into getting some solar panels from Harbor Freight and I wasn't excited about using them to run lights or radios or some other pedestrian thing.Part of the attraction of solar is that if the power goes out you still have some electricity. We don't lose power very often in central Florida, but we did have a hurricane a few years ago that actually put the grid down for several days, not just several hours. It was then that I realized the most precious thing when you lose the grid is cooling, not heating.Anyone who does camping likely has enough equipment and fuel to cook food for days with what you normally have on hand. The rub is cooling and losing all the food in the fridge. The milk, the eggs.Ice was the first thing that sold out in our grocery stores and it didn't get replenished. Thus, I thought a freezer would be an awesome thing to have in an emergency. You could make your own ice and have lots of frozen food of every variety.Mostly though, I just thought it would be cool beyond belief to run a freezer off solar panels. There aren't many choices out there, so I ordered this Sunzdanzer.5.8 cubic feet is plenty of room.I have run this thing for a couple of years now, and I am impressed. You can expect temperatures to be stable at about 6 degrees Fahrenheit. That's cold enough to freeze anything but ice cream.I think ice cream prefers to be about 0 degrees, so ice cream in this unit will unfortunately be a little too soft. But everything else is great.Popsicles, Lean Cuisines, steak, fish, bread, frozen vegetables all are frozen hard and stay that way.Plus, this unit is extremely quiet. When it is running, the most you can hear is a faint trickling of water sound.Never a motor sound. The engineering is very impressive. One more caveat about the temperature. My results are based on the freezer being indoors with normal indoor temps. If you have this unit out in the garage with super hot temps (like my garage) I have no idea what the freezer would be capable of, but it would be tougher on the unit. The unit came very well packaged and was delivered by an 18 wheeler tractor trailer from New Mexico. It wasn't very heavy either. The unit runs only off 12 volt or 24 volt, so it is totally engineered for solar which is great.I will offer a couple of nit picks, but don't take them to heart, they are small things really.First, there are three baskets that can lay just inside the top of the unit giving you the ability to compartmentalize a bit.You end up with an arrangement like a box of chocolates -you can remove the top layer of items by removing the baskets and get to the bottom layer of food pretty quickly. What I didn't like was the little handle brackets thathang onto the top ledge of the freezer interior -the brackets slip out of position and collapse making you reset them. That is chronic but just an annoyance. The other is the light bulb inside. It is a 24 v bulb and is rather dim when used with 12 v.And you can't find a 12 v. bulb like this anywhere even the manufacturer doesn't have them. The resulting interior light is enough, but only barely.Overall, though I am very impressed with this freezer and recommend it to you.

Buying a Sundanzer involves some choices. First is the size. If you have the space, get the largest unit. The reason is that the compressor is the same for all of them, and the only thing that changes is how often the compressor cycles. So the largest one will draw the same number of watts; it will simply do so a bit more often (using more watt-hours overall). After deciding on the size, you'll have another difficult choice to make: fridge or freezer. In fact there's absolutely no difference between the two except for the thermostat used. You could, as I did, get both thermostats. Then if you later decide you'd rather have a fridge instead of a freezer (or vice-versa), you can swap them in a fairly easy operation.

My unit is currently set up as a fridge. I keep it packed at the coolest setting in a hot garage. The temperature inside stays just above freezing. To accomplish this, the unit consumes approximately 300 watt-hours per day (drawing around 45 watts while the compressor's active). That means a 250 amp-hour 12-volt deep cycle battery will keep this arrangement going for 10 days (assuming you don't mind draining and possibly damaging the battery; normally you don't want to go below 50% of the battery's capacity).

The scenario I've described is fairly demanding; during an extended power outage you'd probably want to adjust the thermostat to something more reasonable than just above freezing. The actual energy usage depends on many factors, including the ambient temperature around the Sundanzer, the ambient temperature around the batteries, the thermostat setting, what you're trying to cool, etc. But hopefully my example will give you some figures to play with.

With the AC/DC option, the Sundanzer can run off AC or DC (typically a deep cycle battery or battery bank, which you supply and is external to the unit). The Sundanzer will use DC as a backup, automatically switching to your batteries if the AC goes out (or was never used in the first place). It won't charge the batteries so you'll still need a battery charger (or charge controller if you're using solar). Note that even if you plan to run this with a solar panel, you'll still need a battery in the equation; the Danfloss compressor needs in-rush amps that panels can't supply. And of course solar isn't possible at night. Photovoltaics, then, are really about charging the battery--not directly running the unit per se.

Physically, the unit is solid although not exactly industrial. It has the thickest walls (most insulation) of any fridge I've ever seen, which no doubt contributes to its impressive efficiency. Inside, the baskets work well and really help with organizing. Under the hood, those who like tinkering with electromechanical things will find that the Sundanzer is very amenable to that, and it wouldn't be difficult to integrate one into a home automation system. The electronics are simple and overengineered--eschewing delicate boards that can be fried by a simple static shock.

Overall, this is a very bare-bones unit, and the entire Sundanzer line could use a refresh. For example, the single control--a plastic knob for the aforementioned analog thermostat--feels cheap and primitive. A digital thermostat capable of spanning a large range would allow the unit to function as a fridge or freezer. An LED display could tell you what the internal temperature is without having to open the unit. I'd also prefer a hasp or lockable latch to the current plastic lip.

As mentioned in other reviews, another downside is the unusual 24-volt 7-watt incandescent bulb. The bulb base appears to be a type E14 (14mm base) SES (small Edison screw), which is the type Europeans might use as nightlights near their beds. True, it only consumes 7 watts, but that's not so impressive given the meager light output. I've seen LED flashlights that are orders of magnitude brighter at a fraction of the wattage. A premium and expensive power-saving product such as the Sundanzer really ought to use LED technology.

While the Sundanzer is not fancy, it is reliable, and there are few other products like it on the market (Engel and SunFrost being the obvious competition). It's also a very flexible product; you can start off using it just like any other fridge/freezer, running it off standard household AC; no batteries or photovoltaics are needed in this configuration. Later, when you're ready, you can explore the DC option, perhaps as part of a series of ongoing steps to reduce your dependence on the grid. Its ability to handle both 12 and 24 VDC is another testament to its flexibility, and one that you'll particularly appreciate if, like so many, you start off with a 12-volt system and later realize that you've outgrown the wattage restrictions due to the unmanageable amperages involved in delivering those watts.

Swift Green Repl. for Samsung DA29-00003G

Swift Green Repl. for Samsung DA29-00003GThis was a little difficult to install, but I eventually was able to get it installed. The water quality is acceptable, one thing I notice is that the water pressure at the water dispenser in the door is very high, almost as if the filter is not really providing any type of filtering.I could be wrong on this, but sure seems that way.

My second order for these filters.I am very pleased with them.Filters can be very expensive and these are quite adequate and save us money.

15" Built-In Wine Cooler

15' Built-In Wine CoolerI just received this wine cooler for a small bar I'm building for my basement.I purchased it with the matching beverage center and was very impressed initially with the build quality. It looks amazing and stores a lot of wine (33 bottles) even though it's only 15" wide. The only negative thing (why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) is that of the 7 shelves only the top one holds larger wine bottles, but it does hold 5 of them. I will update this review once I install and use it for a few months.

Seriously, I am amazed at the complaints I read when Square Trade has been an option, or is for most purchases these days. There is NO excuse for not having this affordable protection for the many purchases made on Amazon. If it breaks, they'll fix it or replace it hassle free, and while up to now I haven't had to use their services after buying protection, I've read enough customer comments to know they're better than any manufacturer or store warranty. If you buy something important to you online, including eBay, go to Square Trade's website and get the insurance!

I recently needed to implement my SquareTrade Warranty for a product that I purchased from Amazon. I have had bad experiences in the past with warranty companies and didn't know what to expect. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that SquareTrade is the real deal! They took the time to assist me through the claims process and I received my claim payment in less than 24 hours. I can definitely recommend them to anyone who is considering purchasing a product warranty!
