KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixers

KitchenAid KSM150PSAC Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, Almond CreamMy wedding gift mixer (a Sunbeam Mixmaster) turned 33 a week before Christmas, and my husband thought it was time for me to have a new one.He gifted me on Christmas with the KitchenAid 5 Qt. Artisan in white.I love this mixer and leave it out on my counter, something I never did with the Mixmaster.I recently purchased the citrus juicer attachment from Amazon and am very pleased with it as well. I have not read all 109 previous reviews on this site, but I have read a few that were disgruntled because their Artisans did not mix well.I initially had the same problem with the beater/bowl clearance. It is very simple to remedy. There is a beater adjustment screw on the mixer and the manual describes how to make the adjustments.I got even better instructions by calling customer support at KitchenAid. The technician told me to drop a dime into the empty bowl, turn the mixer on (about setting 2) using the flat beater, and it should move the dime 1/4" to 1/2" each time it rotates around the bowl. This is the right clearance for the beater to mix everything at the bottom of the bowl, but not low enough to cause wear on the beater from constant friction with the bottom of the bowl during usage.I tweaked the screw setting 1/4 turn each time until I got that dime moving. At this setting, I can now beat a single egg white to stiff peaks in the 5 qt. bowl. That's impressive.

This mixer is as sturdy as a tank, and you can hear the quality as it mixes.Although I had previously purchased a KitchenAid mixer for my daughter as a gift, I would never have splurged on one for myself.I am so happy my husband thought I was worth it!

This KitchenAid mixer is an excellent investment! I just love mine! The dough hook attachment is the greatest invention ever. No more kneading! I used this wonderful machine to make 4 pounds of Pizza Geina dough without breaking a sweat. Add your ingredients, turn it on and it does the rest! It has a very powerful motor and every part of this mixer is excellent quality and well made. It is simple to lock in the mixing bowl and it is also a breeze to clean. The different attachments are very easy to attach and remove. It would be impossible not to love it! Did I mention how easy the clean up is?I love it so much I bought the KitchenAid quilted cover for it.Once you use this mixer you will never want to use anything else! The Best!!!

In short, don't be.Most of the relatively small percentage of negative reviews on this mixer fall into one of three explainable categories, so if you're considering it, follow along:

The most worrisome category of complaints about this mixer involves a very small number of stories about the food-grade grease that lubricates the internal bearings leaking out of the mixer and into the food-bowl.Although reported in only a tiny percentage of reviews, this was probably the one complaint that worried me the most, simply because if true, let's just say it:it's disgusting.

The first thing to keep in mind in evaluating this complaint is that EVERY electric mixer requires lubricated bearings.Changing models or brands won't change that, and although there may be design differences that make the possibility somewhat different across various models, it's just going to always be there to some degree on every mixer. It's pointless to waste time, in other words, worrying about something that is going to be a possibility on ANYTHING you can possibly buy.So that's the first category.

The second category category of complaints has to do with the mixer dying somehow, either arriving dead or dying quickly. It seems a lot of these complaints are dated from 2007-2009, so maybe there really *was* something going on, but those seem to have tapered off.For the rest, I can only say that speed matters:2=LOW for dough, 4=MED for batter, and 6=HIGH for creaming.Speeds 8 and 10 are ONLY for whipping air into cream or egg whites with the wire whisk.Anything faster than 2 for kneading dough and you're literally playing with fire.

I can say this with the authority that only comes from wrecking a lot of motors. The quickest way to burn out an appliance is to exceed the available power with the requested load, so the number one way to kill a mixer is to simply add a large quantity of sticky dough and then crank up the dough hook while saying "if 2 is good, then 4 is better and 10 is best."Turning up the speed increases the load, leaving the motor with no reserve capacity as the dough gets tougher. The result is easy to predict.

The second way to kill an electric motor, surprisingly (and you won't be warned about this one by the manual) is to use it with an extension cord, especially a light-duty one. This is the appliance equivalent of running a race while breathing through a straw. You don't run your stove that way, you don't run your refrigerator that way, and you shouldn't run your mixer that way, either.Even WITH the recommended amount of dough, and AT the recommended speed (2), you can still kill it this way.(Please see the comments on this review if you're interested in more discussion on this).

Anyone who is unaware of either of these points will naturally and understandably blame the mixer when it starts smoking and burns out.I'm certainly not saying one of these types of abuse explains every single case of mixer failure--there have to be SOME manufacturing defects--but I'd be willing to bet one of these two things explains 8 out of 10 of them.If you really do need a mixer for large quantities of dough every day, then please invest in a commercial-grade mixer like a twoto four-thousand dollar Hobart mixer, where the designers KNOW the duty-requirements you have in mind. You shouldn't try to haul two tons of rock with a half-ton pickup truck all day and expect it to last, nor should you make the equivalent mistake with a mixer.

The remaining category of complaints seems to be some version of the beaters hitting the bowl. This is a simple adjustment that has been covered elsewhere, but if you missed it, all you need to do is place a dime in the bowl and use the adjustment screw (in the crook of the tip-up hinge) to lower or raise the flat beater until it moves the dime just 1/4 to 1/2 inch on each sweep. This is only end-user adjustment you'll ever need to make, and it likely solves the entirety of the remaining category of complaints I read about.

I decided to take a chance on this mixer despite the negative reviews, after thinking it through in this way, and I'm very happy with it so far (and wow, is it ever better than the old Sunbeam stand mixer I had for ages!)If it ever quits or I change my mind about it, I'll let you know; otherwise, the deal on Amazon is as good as you'll find.(UPDATE:That last comment was made back when this mixer was selling for $229, but the price has risen dramatically since then. The rest of my review still stands...)

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) When I first started baking all my own breads, cakes, etc., from scratch, the books said that I needed a bread machine. I bought one and it didn't work so well with the GF "funny flours." A book finally told me to forget about the machine, buy a stand mixer and use the oven. Brilliant!

I bought my Kitchenaid and haven't looked back. I use this thing at least twice a week, sometimes every day. I don't know how I lived without it. My mom just bought one after she saw me calmly measuring stuff and dumping it in while the mixer mixed all by it itself. (She's been suffering with a handheld all these years.) Stand mixers also mix more thoroughly than handhelds. They also can mix chocolate chip cookie dough all the way to the end of the flour additions.

I've had my Kitchenaid for about 5 years now, though 3 moves, and it's still as sturdy and reliable as the day I bought it. The paint is still perfect. Not a scratch. Certainly not a chip. It's beautiful and lustrous. I have Onyx Black. While I like the look of the Onyx a lot, it's obvious if there's a little flour dusting the top of it. This makes it convenient to clean, but if you don't use it very often but do want it out, you might want to choose a lighter color that won't show dust.

Caveat: It's heavy. B/c I use mine so much, I display it on my counter, drag it forward, use it, wipe it off with a damp rag, and push it back. (And wash the bowl, of course.) But it's worth it's weight in gold. They are a lovely appliance. Not like a frumpy toaster.

Also, a previous review somewhere said that it left dry ingredients in the bottom of the bowl and didn't incorporate them. There's an adjustment screw that you have to fine-tune before you use it. Instructions are in the booklet. I adjusted mine before I used it for the first time (I compulsively read instructions,) and never had that problem.

Buy yourself a proper mixer. You'll be so glad you did.

First, the mixer works great.Everything most home-bakers could ever want. But I strongly suggest you select a smooth finish.I got the Krinkle Gray. (Don't know if thats still available.)It looks very 'professional', but it's hard to keep clean. After the first batch of bread dough, the mixer was nearly white, and it took some serious scrubbing to get the flour off the textured surface.

As to the mechanics of the mixer itself, very few complaints. The tilt-head makes it possible to remove the bowl without dismantling the beater (unlike the lift-bowl models).I mainly use the dough hook, and have found that the motor tends to bog down just a bit on extremely heavy doughs. But as I always do the final kneading by hand anyway, its not a major issue; just a little more hand work.

If I ever buy another stand mixer, it will definately be a KitchenAid.Thing is, this mixer will probably outlast me by decades.

166 Bottle Wine Refrigerator with Stainless Steel Framed Door

166 Bottle Wine Refrigerator with Stainless Steel Framed Door
  • Manufactured to the Highest Quality Available.
  • Design is stylish and innovative. Satisfaction Ensured.
  • Great Gift Idea.

Nice cooler. Good price point. I like the controls and the even temperature regulation. The light and door lock are great small "details" that are quite useful. Door hinge is reversible and setup was a breeze.

My biggest issue is the drawer spacing...barely deep enough to accommodate the slightly thicker bottles that seem to dominate the market these days. To access the back of the drawer, the bottles in the front of the drawer get scraped right across the label. If the front row of bottles is turned sideways to keep the label from peeling off, they can't be read. What a nuisance! Needs about 1 more inch of drawer spacing to jump to an excellent rating.

This is a great purchase! Not only do my wines stay a consistent 54 degress but it looks very classy and cool. You do need to maneuver some of the larger bottles but they usually fit if you pull the shelf out all the way or put the big ones (champagne, etc) on the top or bottom shelf. All in all, I am VERY happy with this fabulous wine fridge.

Samsung RFG293HARS 29 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel French Door Refrigerator - Energy Star

Samsung RFG293HARS 29 Cu. Ft. Stainless Steel French Door Refrigerator - Energy Star
  • More usable space inside for easier storage
  • LED lighting
  • Twin Cooling keeps food fresher
  • ENERGY STAR(R) Compliant
  • Superior Ice Production and Storage

Must say, researching a refrigerator is a perilous endeavor, fraught with all kinds of misinformation and marketing hype, not to mention biased reviews on all the manufacturer websites that they've hand picked and pruned, so you never really know who to trust.

After much hemming and hawing and talking to some friends of friends in the business, we were told that Samsung was one of the better brands from a reliability standpoint. In addition, they happened to have some the most spacious designs and I had seen fewer horrifically bad reviews than other brands, so I decided to give them a chance.

By pure fate, my wife and I stumbled on this particular model in a store right before we pulled the trigger on an order for a slightly different model. This one, as you'll note in the photos, has no ice maker or water dispenser in the door. Furthermore, inside, it has no ice maker on the upper left shelf, taking up a ton of room and limiting your interior space. You also get back all the storage space on the left side door, whereas the other models you sacrifice this in order to have a dispenser. Since we rarely if ever used the ice/water dispenser in our old fridge door, we decided to forgo it this time around and get the extra space instead. In hindsight, this was the best decision we could have made! Not only is this model MUCH cheaper than the one with the ice maker and water dispenser, but it is also more efficient AND it has a ton more interior space, despite being slightly smaller (28.5 cu vs. 31.6). We still get the awesome 'cool select' pantry inside the fridge section, and essentially the same (but more spacious) layout as the 31.6 cu model for about 40% less money. It also looks cleaner/neater in our kitchen, with smooth, pearl white doors on both sides, you get the clean symmetry and there's less moving parts to wear out or break/replace/warranty/etc.

And yes, you still get ice, there's an ice maker in the freezer section, tucked away in the back that fills a bucket (optional, you can turn it off to get the extra freezer space) with ice. If you turn off the ice maker and remove the bucket, you have the exact same amount of storage space in the freezer as the other models, which is another huge plus.

As far as noise level, since I saw this a lot in other reviews, I have to say that this unit is supremely quiet. You can't hear it from the other side of the wall in an adjacent room, unless it is dropping ice into the bucket (not really any way to make that quiet on any brand of fridge). The compressor and fan are both very quiet, enough so that in an open kitchen-to-living room design, I don't have any issues watching TV while it's running. Heck, even when I'm eating dinner right in front of the fridge, the noise is a non-issue. Our old one was quiet, but this one is even better, so I really cannot complain at all about the noise level, it is fabulously quiet, at least for refrigerator standards.

I like the dual cooling circuits, so that you don't mix air between the freezer and the fridge sections, that is something I always wanted. I'm of the opinion that this has to be more efficient too, versus blowing freezer air into the fridge section. Additionally, the controls on this fridge are stupid easy, with one button to set the temp in the fridge, one for the freezer. No dials, no gimmicky stuff or moving parts to break. Clean, simple, crisp digital readout on the upper lip of the fridge's door frame, similar to a lot of designs I'd seen in Europe the last few years, and no wasted space inside for a control panel or any of that nonsense.

The lighting is spectacular, with ample LEDs that emit far, far less heat than the old incandescent bulbs and use much less electricity in the process. The light is bright, clean and easy on the eyes, especially if you open it up in the middle of the night for a drink or a snack once your eyes have already adjusted to the darkness. That used to annoy me insanely with our old fridge, I would go practically blind if I got up in the middle of the night to get a drink!

On the whole, this is simply a wonderful refrigerator and I would definitely buy it again. The price point compared to the larger models (which actually have LESS storage because of the ice/water dispenser setup on one side and one door) is dramatically lower, but all the same high dollar features and the extremely open layout are still there. You really get the maximum bang for your buck with this model. If you have a chance, compare it side-by-side at a brick-and-mortar store with the larger 31 cu model that has the ice maker in the fridge, and you'll see how much space you lose because of the assembly in the left side door. After doing that comparison and thinking about how much stuff we put in our fridge, this was a no-brainer decision for our family. The fact that it cost so much less, that was icing on the cake.

Maximum value for the dollar and a good quality brand, packed with a ton of amazing features, this is a definite buy. I would not hesitate to buy this again or to recommend it to friends and family.

What we like about it.Very stylish, modern looking, stainless steel is beautiful.Huge refrigerator, and no ice dispenser taking needed refrigerator room. Easy access to everything with french doors.Very sturdy build.Very well protected with wrapping on delivery so not a single scratch on it. Would have been very pleased, if it was just furniture. Stainless steel shows fingerprints everywhere, just a warning, but we knew that beforehand, and just remember to always use the handle or clean it frequently.

What we did not like about it: The refrigerator freezes everything, despite being on factory setting of 38F.We tried everything, turned the refrigerator setting on warmest 46F, freezer on warmest setting to 8F, crisper on warmest setting.Tried unplugging for ten minutes (resets it), then 30 mins, then an hour. But even with refrigerator on 46f, 2 days later, everything still freezing.Destroys fruit or vegetables in one night, frozen solid. When we went to ask that it be returned/replaced as it is brand new, we were told we were not the first with same complaint about refrigerator freezing things. So we went with another brand in similar size stainless steel.

We wereamazed by the room in the frige. More fits in the door than I expected. After reading other reviews about freezing food I bought a frige thermometer that reads 38 with the frige set to 40. I do not have any problems with food freezing. One of the frige shelves folds in half if you would want to put something tall (maybe a vase of flowers) in the frige a nice option. Along with all the room another nice feature is the lighting it is bright and easy to find things even in the back of the frige. The freezer is also large we added a 20lb turkey at thanksgiving but still have room for our normal freezer food. If you need the room it's a good value and an attractive choice.

Letter to Consumer Reports:

I bought this SAMSUNG RF266ABRS fridge because it was recommended by Consumer Reportsin August 2009. This fridge and other SAMSUNG fridges should be taken off the recommended list because there is an inherent design defect that causes ice buildup on the evaporator coils.

First there is a rattling noise as the fan hits the ice buildup.

Then the noise stops when the ice completely blocks the fan but then there is no more cooling happening.

There is even a class action lawsuit against SAMSUNG fridges:

Please look into this Samsung ice buildup problem. The Samsung fridges should definitively not be on the recommended list but put on the "do not buy" list. The ice buildup issue occurs about 1 year after purchase. SAMSUNG is not acknowledging the problem and does not help its customers.

Letter to SAMSUNG:

I am deeply unsatisfied on how SAMSUNG handled the warranty policy with my SAMSUNG Fridge French Door Model RF266ABRS. This fridge was defective starting Year 1 and was not repaired appropriately the 1st time. All was done on the 1st service visit was to defrost the evaporator not fixing the problem itself.

Of course, the problem reoccurred 1 year later and every year after that. Since the technician explained the problem, how to solve it and SAMSUNG customer service gave me a hard time because it was a few days over the 1 year purchase date, I dealt with it personally by unplugging the unit and let it sit unplug for 24 hours. Not a satisfactory resolution, just a quick workaround, until I got fed up with losing food and asked for SAMSUNG to resolve this problem once and for all.

First this problem should have been resolved the 1st visit. Secondly I learned recently from numerous complaints and videos on the web that this is a defective design in SAMSUNG fridges that causes the ice buildup on the evaporator.

Here is a video showing the defrost sensor modification kit to fix evaporator ice buildup. This is for the SAMSUNG RSH1fridge but it is the same modification that was done on my fridge by the repair technician who came to my house:

Many SAMSUNG fridges have the same cooling design thus sharing the same ice buildup issue.

I was charged $104.68 to fix SAMSUNG own defective design! This is outrageous and no decent company would shift the cost from itself to their customers . It shows utter disrespect for its own customers, not counting the monetary damage. Sir, should I remind you that your customers are your most important assets and should be your priority number one!

SAMSUNG should have done everything in its power to help its loyal customers by fixing its defective fridges FREE OF CHARGE.

The technician explained that he had to move the defrost sensor away from the evaporator in order to let the defrost cycle run longer and completely defrost the evaporator from any ice buildup. He also put a wider drain clip. The older clip was too small. It would get iced up and not let water drain away from the evaporator. There is also a new metal clip that attaches to the heating element and goes inside the drain clip to heat any ice there if needed so the drain cannot get clogged. In addition, a new seal kit put on the market by SAMSUNG 3 months ago was used to seal the evaporator compartment to prevent moisture to get in and improve circulation airflow provided by the fan.

  • Countertop appliance makes up to 26 pounds of ice per day
  • Portable, retro styling; holds up to a gallon of water at a time
  • Produces first batch in 6 to 15 minutes; drops 9 cubes per cycle
  • Choose from 3 different cube sizes; ice scooper included
  • Measures 11-1/2 by 11-4/5 by 14-1/4 inches; 90-day limited warranty

First let me say that I loved this ice maker. It was the only source of ice in my home and I used it several times a week over the last 10 months. Around the holidays and in the summer it was used almost daily. It was loud as some other reviewers indicated, but something you can get used to.It made the amount of ice as described in the online descriptions. The color attracted me to this unit, as well as the price. It was cheaper than some of the other units I had been reviewing for purchase. This machine was exactly what I expected.

Recently, it stopped working. The unit won't power on consistently. When it finally does power on, the ice tray is malfunctioning due to a crack running up the side.I contacted the manufacturer, but because it was out of the 90 or 180 day warranty period there was nothing they could do except to recommend a local appliance repair shop.I don't recommend this model or this manufacturer. The manufacturers' user guide for this ice maker touts this as an ice maker to last for years of use.Well, that has not been my experience.I think the price of this unit is too much to spend for something that breaks in less than a year.

Seems that many of us had common problems.

I had this machine for less then a year and it stopped working, the ice tray broke and the motor will not turn on. The manufacturer will not do anything because it was out of warranty. They would not even do anything else to help me. I feel that this product is not worth the money and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I've used this ice maker every day for most of 2 years. I know its out of warranty, but when an ice cube got stuck under the tray, it cracked up the side.I'm willing to buy a new ice tray, but can't get any help to do so. I'm getting told that there are no parts available for it.So because a 2 dollar plastic part broke, I'm out $200.Up till now, I've had no problems with this ice maker, but if you need help later on, don't expect much.My initial review was 1 star, but it should be 4 stars for product and 1 star for product/customer service. What good is any product without some kind of customer service?Your not going to buy a car if the tires that come on it are not replaceable and when worn out, you have to buy another car, are you?$20,000 or $200.It does not matter.

I WAS GIVEN THIS PRODUCT AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT AND USED IT FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY (JULY 4TH) FOR OUR PARTY.IT IS TRUE THAT IT IS NOT THE FASTEST ICE MAKER, BUT THIS THING WILL CONTINUALLY CHUG OUT ICE CUBES ALL DAY LONG.I LIKED THAT I COULD COLLECT THEM OR LET MY GUESTS COME AND SCOOP OUT THEIR OWN ICE.THIS REALLY WAS A HIT AT THE PARTY AND EVERYONE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS A VERY ATTRACTIVE APPLIANCE.IT ALSO HAS SOME FEATURES THAT I REALLY LIKE.I LIKE HOW THE ICE MACHINE WILL STOP MAKING CUBES WHEN THE BIN IS FULL, SO THAT IT DOES NOT OVERFLOW OR BACKUP AND CAUSE PROBLEMS.I ALSO LIKE THAT WHEN YOU DO EMPTY THE ICE COMPARTMENT IT STARTS MAKING CUBES AGAIN ON ITS OWN.I ALSO LIKE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN CHOOSE THE SIZE ICE CUBES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE (SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE).THIS MACHINE DOES NOT PRODUCE ICE LIKE A PROFESSIONAL ICE MAKER, BUT I FOUND IT VERY USEFUL AND RELIABLE FOR PRODUCING A STEADY AMOUNT OF ICE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DAY AND WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND IT!

I've been through two so far and neither has worked brand new out-of-the-box!Since I'm sick of returning them (and Sears only had a couple left on their shelves), I spoke to "Al" in customer service at The Helman Group, Ltd in Oxnard, CA.He said to bring it back to Sears for a refund (not a replacement) because there were a lot of problems with them and the line was discontinued for that reason.

While I appreciate his honesty, it's obvious that there was a design or production problem but, since they'd already been sold to the retailer, it wasn't Helman's problem!Great!

Haier WDNSC145 Convertible Freestanding Full-Size/Tabletop Water Dispenser

Haier WDNSC145 Convertible Freestanding Full-Size/Tabletop Water DispenserThis is my first Haier product.I've had this for a couple weeks and it has been working great. When you first turn the cold water switch on, it takes about 10-15 mins to get cold, but if you leave it on it's cold all the time.Same with the hot water, it takes about 5 minutes or so to heat up.

One problem i've noticed (minus the one star) is that when you have both hot and cold water switches on, both the hot water and cold water compete for ready access. This is not a big deal, so I usually just leave one switch on a time (usually cold since it gets the majority usage).

As far as heating and cooling quality, when it's hot, it's SUPER hot. When it gets cold, it's cold enough to condensate your glass, but not ice cold still refreshing!

UPDATE:Here's something else I wanted to add.Unlike other water coolers, this one does not run constantly cold or hot. If you have the cold switch on, it will keep recooling the water in cycles (you'll see the cold water light go on every 20-30 mins or after use).Same with hot water. If you have the switch on, it will reheat the water in cycles (every 20-30 mins or after use).Another minor annoyance (-.5 stars), but again, it's tolerable.

Updated rating:3.5 out of 5 stars

I was attracted to this unit because it includes separate power switches to turn off the hot and/or cold water when you want to. I like hot water on the red tap, and room temperature water on the blue tap, and it's actually very hard to find that combination of features.

Unfortunately, the water that comes out tastes like burnt plastic. I called manufacturer, who suggested soaking the inside of the unit with solution of baking soda (1 Tbsp), vinegar (1 Tbsp), and water (1 Gal), but this did not fix the problem.

One other note: Having tried out a few water dispenser units recently, I can say without a doubt that this one has the most annoying child safety device on the hot water tap. As a result, the hot water tap is awkward to use.

Manufacturer offered to send a replacement but it would take three weeks to arrive. Since we had already waited two weeks for delivery of the original unit, I decided to return the product for a refund instead.

The Amazon.com return page said I would have to pay return shipping, but I called Amazon and they sent me a free return shipping label.

In sum: the product quality was lousy but the customer service from the manufacturer was pretty good and from Amazon was outstanding.

I bought this unit when I was moved to the bungalows at my school and wanted a way to have hot water for instant coffee and cold water for the many days when our room a/c is broken. For the three months that I've had it so far, it's been great.I like the fact that I can turn the power off on the unit for evenings or weekends (just adds good peace of mind), and switch it on in the mornings for quick hot water and refreshing cold water throughout the day.I use 3-gallon home delivery bottles that I take to and from school without problem and these, combined with the countertop nature of this dispenser, make this just too convenient for me NOT to have!

We've only had the dispenser for about a month now, so I don't know how valuable my opinion really is. Nevertheless, no problems thus far. The design is slightly confusing, not in respect to putting the base together, that was pretty straightforward, took only 15-20 minutes. But the base is made out of thin plastic panels, on which you place the 25-30 pound water filter machine, and then on top of that goes the 5 gallon jug of water. Honestly, I'm amazed the whole thing hasn't collapsed. But there it is, with no visible signs of the dispenser falling over anytime soon. There was a bizarre, chlorine like odor in the kitchen the fist week we turned the machine on, but no one's gotten sick from the water. -UPDATE: the dispenser lasted from 2007 to 2012. That's five years without one problem with it. Not a bad deal for the price.

We recently discontinued our bottled water service at work to save some money. So the four employees that are in the office on a daily basis chipped in to buy our own unit (and refill our 5-gal jug at home).I did a lot of reviewing on Amazon and other sites. This unit stood out as the best deal. After some easy assembly and start-up, we are all extremely pleased with it (one month later). It's great having on/off switches for both hot and cold water. We can turn the unit off on the weekends to save power. We did have a slight leak in the cold water spigot. But after popping the lever with it's own spring action, it re-seated and has worked fine since.Something to keep an eye on.Very happy overall.

  • Frost-free operation; interior light for easy viewing; hand wash only
  • Measures 26-1/2 by 32 by 64-1/2 inches; 1-year warranty

We are very happy with our refrigerator. We keep cold drinks in our garage and this was a perfect solution, as it has no freezer. We could not be happier with the product itsself.

However, delivery is absolutely unacceptable and we will not order large appliances from Amazon EVER again. The delivery team was just barely willing to get the box in the door of our garage.(I don't know what would have happened if we needed it in our 2nd floor kitchen.)

I had to man-handle the box into place, cut the layers of the box open and unscrew the attached wooden shipping pallet all by myself.

None of this would have been a big deal, but we did pay $120 for delivery and I was not expecting to have to do this all by myself before we could get cars back into our garage.

The whole experience took a lot of time an hassle to finally get the fridge delivered.Product arrived with a dent in the door and scatches down the one side.I would have sent it back but that would just start the whole shipping nightmare over again. The fridge itself is not very energy efficient and it needs to be set on the highest setting to get stuff cold. For our garage this is fine but I would not buy this product to use inside as the motor is noisy.I guess you get what you pay for and this one is cheap all the way around.

GE GXRTDR In-Line Refrigerator/Icemaker Filter

GE GXRTDR In-Line Refrigerator/Icemaker Filter
  • The GE GXRTDR inline filter reduces unpleasant taste and odor while minimizing dirt, rust and sediment
  • The GE GXRTDR Inline Refrigerator Water Filter reduces chlorine taste and odor to deliver clean, delicious water to your refrigerator and icemaker
  • The GE GXRTDR inline water filter has been tested and certified to NSF / ANSI Standard 42 for the reduction of Chlorine and Class V Particulates
  • GE has discontinued the GXRTQR filter and recommends using the GE GXRTDR inline filter in its place
  • The GE GXRTDR refrigerator filter life is up to 6 months or 2500 gallons depending on water usage and water quality

My wife bought the GXRTDR in-line water filter because the GXRTQR filter was no longer available and the box said it would work as a replacement. As far as I can tell, it will only work if your old tubing is 1/4 in.Mine is 1/2 in. There were adapter fittings for the GXRTQR so I never had any problem with replacing it.I tried to do an install, thinking that the stub of a tube inside the fitting would marry, but it was too short, so I had to put the old filter back on.I have to either replace the tubes on fridge & at the faucet, or find another filter.

I bought the GXRTDR in-line water filter as a replacement to the GXRTQR filter. What a huge mistake! The old filter had a very secure connection. The new GXRTDR has a "quick-connect" style connector.(Ideally, you cut the tube and just stick it in the connector, and it automatically locks in-place.The connector is a little like a "Chinese Finger Trap" where you stick your fingers in a woven bamboo cylinder and your fingers won't come out until you compress the weave.)Anyway, I've used quick-connectors at my work for many years and never had a problem, but I had never used this brand.I pulled the fridge out of its niche and followed the directions.I cut out my old filter hardware and installed the new filter.I let the water run to clear the initial carbon particles, and then I checked for leakage and the connectors seemed to be sealed.I put the refrigerator back in the niche and sometime that night, it sprung a leak at the internal o-ring seal.My kitchen is on the second floor, so the water leaked through the floor soaking the drywall ceiling in the bedroom below. It was a huge expensive, time-wasting mess.

Like the above poster I got this filter to replace my previous GXRTQR inline filter.

My only complaint is that the outlet port for the water tubing was a pain in the neck to get to go up flush against the area it is supposed to. which resulted in water spurting everywhere.however once I got that in it worked fine.

no leaks or antything of the sort

After years of buying those expensive GE filter cartridges $35 to $50, that the manufacturer hooks you into purchasing when they sell you their refrigerator, I put the blank plug that comes with the refrigerator in and installed this easy to install filter on the supply line in the rear of the refrigerator.Works great, and saves lots of money.I will definitely purchase more of these in the future. When initially installed the first gallon of water comes out black from the charcoal but once its flushed, it is a great filtration system.

I was very excited to find a cube refrigerator that doesn't require 1/4 of the internal space for the compressor and an unnecessary freezer.Woohoo Avanti! There were two reviews for this product, but they were mixed:1/5 and 5/5 stars.I took a gamble, and here's my take.

Pros:The fridge is very light (see cons), and there is ample interior space.Compared to the 1.7 cu ft fridge it was replacing, it felt like twice the space due to no freezer or compressor, and the internal layout is a more useful configuration.I'm actually considering purchasing it again despite my one-star review and the cons below simply because the internal space is 10x more useful.

Cons:The fridge comes in a box with a protective layer of styrofoam, but the styrofoam on four sides is only about 1/4 inch thick. Some protection! One of the back corners of the fridge was slightly dented, but it was a minor cosmetic blemish. The dent could have occurred simply because someone looked at the fridge the wrong way.The stainless steel door is decent, but the black sides, back, and top of the fridge are made of what feels only marginally sturdier than those disposable aluminum cooking pans. The plastic of the interior also feels quite flimsy, but I never got to try it out because the unit did not work and I didn't get to put anything into it.

Also, not a pro or con, but I neglected to look at the product demensions thinking a 1.7 cu ft unit = another 1.7 cu ft unit, but this fridge is taller and skinnier than the "typical" cube refrigerator if that matters to you.

I bought this to use instead of the big fridge I have, because I hated the noise it did, and I don't have much food in the fridge, so I don't need anything big.

This one is very silent (the fan did some noise at the begining, maybe like a desktop computer, but I haven't heard it later).

It's quite cool, so far it's working very good.

Take into account that it doesn't have freezer, so you can't make ice or have froozen things.

I was nervous reading the prior reviews about damage in shipping, but my wife really really wants a silent fridge so I figured I would get this to the office and try it, and use it for myself if it made any hints of noises she might be unhappy about.

First the good news it arrived without major damage. The original manufacturer's packaging is simple corrugated cardboard (20lbs crush or similar) and took a decent beating in transit (not sure if it arrived at eek that way or if FedEx applied during delivery to me).Opening the packaging reveals a similarly skimpy amount of protective styrofoam about 2mm thick around the sides and a 5mm molded top and bottom cap fitting rather snugly.I can see why folks who have had dropped or mistreated boxes saw damage the 2mm syrofoam will NOT protect this unit from side impacts. There was some minor damage, luckily to the "back" of the unit denting the thin aluminum wall, but this did not appear to damage any internals and wont be visible.

Second the so-so news this box is manufactured about as cheaply as is possible given modern technology the Peltier solid-state thermo-electric cooler inside may be gee-whiz futuristic, but the chassis is standard main-land-China technology (not knocking the wizards there, I do admire their ingenuity at building material goods faster and cheaper than seems feasible).Fit of the front door is slightly off so that the plastic door insert rubs as the door is opened and closed, but otherwise the action of the door is smooth and noise-less.

The better news it works, 3 minutes after plugging it in on "high" it is noticeably cooler inside.Given the actual heat transfer physics of a Peltier junction in joules-per-second I would guess this fridge would struggle to take a massive object like a gallon of milk from room-temp down to 40F, but something that starts cool should remain such. Insulation in the box is limited due to the size, however the materials are a good choice (standard nylon and polystyrene) and should be as resistant to stains and mold as any other commercial refrigerator.

Last the best news the device is "silent" as far as I can tell there is a small heat-exchange fan on the back to draw room air across the Peltier junction, even when it is running continuously I cannot hear it from 5 feet away, my Apple MacBook laptop idle fan is louder from the same distance. No rattles, creaks or other aberrations.

So far the fridge is quiet and cool, although I've only had it for two days. It arrived very very damaged, so that it can't stand correctly (rocks back and forth) and is extremely dented. The funny thing is, the box showed no signs of damage. The fridge, however, is partially smashed. I think it's a well functioning fridge, so I'd suggest buying it in store since it arrived in such a bad condition.

I bought one about 18 months ago. It's just the right size for the apartments in my building.

The problem is that now the interior LED light flashes on and sometimes goes completely out.

I can't find anything in the manual about this problem or how to fix it.

I'm greatly disappointed since i have bought other Danby products before and they have been good purchases.

These great filters. So much easier then the bad old

days when the filters was behind the refridge., and

was in line and was a mess to change.

The problems that the one of the previous users

was reporting can be avoided by checking the manual

for your fridge for reseting the warning light. It's easy,

once you know how to do it.

And even if you never get the little red light to go out

the filters come with date stickers so you can be reminded

when it's time to change the filter. Add to that the ease

of installation and the effect filtering and you get a product

that functions very well.

I purchased a new home in august that came with a fridge that used one of these filters. I noticed when I would get water from the fridge water dispensers it would always taste metallic. Then one day the change filter light came on so I bought one of these filters and now the water from the fridge tastes great. These things really do work! They are easy to install as well.

Whynter Portable Fridge and Freezer

Whynter FM-45G 45-Quart Portable Refrigerator/Freezer, PlatinumJust got this was packed well and as usual Amazon got it rolling out the door promptly.Plugged it in and it worked.Cooled from 80 degrees to 45 degrees in probably 15 minutes. The fan is not noisy and it doesn't draw much power at all.I just got it, so could die tomorrow but the way it sounds I can tell they did their homework.

Even the latch on the top door is great quality has a spring action the puts tension on the lid to keep it somewhat down even before you latch.Smart.Only complaint is it came with a dent in the front of it that happened between the first box and second 'shipping' box at the factory.Ah, but so what, it's nice and seems to work great.Did the flash freeze, got down to -2 and stayed there.Outside didn't get cool so the insulation must be good.

I'm a big solar guy, so when I go camping will run this off the sun + battery during the day and just a battery at night.I will post a pic showing it with a 1/2 gallon of milk inside, to give you some perspecitve.

I was going to buy an Engel fridge/freezer but couldn't justify the high price tag.

This fridge/freezer is about $400.00 cheaper and while it may not last as long as an Engel i'm sure it will last at least 5 years with proper care.

I live overseas and spending this much on a portable fridge is risky how they handle the mail is a crap shoot.

I didn't expect this to arrive for at least month from the time of order. I was surprised it arrived in 4 days which is remakable through the Military mail system. In fact as much as it weighs it arrived without a scratch!

The fridge is simple to operateAC or run on a deep cycle battery. Set the temp you want and thats it.

It's bit on the heavy side but not so much you can't lift it where you want to set it. The Plus is the removable baskets which should save you some back pain over time.

With these type of applances, they either work out of the box or they don't the first time you plug them in.

It's been my experence if they work they will work trouble free for a long time.

Luckly mine worked right out of the box :)

looks like I'll be one happy camper :)

GE PHS925STSS Profile 30" Stainless Steel Electric Slide-In Induction Range - Convection

GE PHS925STSS Profile 30' Stainless Steel Electric Slide-In Induction Range - Convection
  • 5.3 cu. ft. oven capacity
  • Induction cooktop technology
  • PreciseAir Convection System
  • NextStep controls
  • Heavy-duty roller rack

After much research, and driving far and wide to locate one up close and personal to look at, hands down this was the range for us.

It is beautifully made, very sleek and modern, and works like a dream. All fans on it (convection and component cooling) are whisper quiet. The control board is located on the front (unlike the free-standing model) and is very intuitive to use. It is definitely what I call "granny friendly," i.e. even those from the non-digital age will be able to use it easily.

The oven is very spacious and at high altitude only took 13 minutes to heat from cold to 425 degrees. I especially love the sliding rack and will be replacing the other two standard racks with those. Even at 425 degrees, the front of the oven door remained cool to the touch, suggesting that this stove is very well insulated. The first batch of cookies in it came out beautifully and the timing was +/1 minute from my usual recipe so I call that spot on.

The first time I used the stovetop, I put pan down, turned the heat to 5 and dropped in a pat of butter which began to melt *instantly* and I do mean instantly. Water boils in no time, and clean-up is a breeze.

The pans I am using are: Cuisinart FCT-10 French Classic Tri-Ply Stainless 10-Piece Cookware Set and they work fantastically with this stove.

I could not be more thrilled, and will update this review as time goes on.

Buy GE PHS925STSS Profile 30" Stainless Steel Electric Slide-In Induction Range - Convection Now

I purchased my GE PHS9252STSS 30" slide in Induction Range from Pacific Sales after reading Consumer Reports, Gardenweb forums and other reviews.

I installed it and wired a 4 ft x 4 prong wire so that it could easily fit behind the range (match the colors, black to black, white to white, green to green and pink to red). Also installed the anti-tip bracket to the floor tile.

I went out and purchased a new 13 piece 18/10 Stainless Steel cookware set from Costco for around $180. The induction burners are great, they heat up very quickly. You can boil water in like 90seconds. Very precise and quick heat control, when you turn it down, within seconds, you can see heat change. Since the new cookware is magnetic, once you lift the pan, the burner will turn off after 20 seconds or so (initially it will blink). This way you can never leave them on accidentally as long as no pan remains on top.

Clean up is a snap with Cerama Bryte glass cooktop cleaner once a week, otherwise mild soap and water is enough.

The oven does take time to heat up, if you set it for 325C, temperature starts at 100C, changes 1 degree every 10 seconds or so, so expect to wait 8-10minutes. Then it can maintain the temperature easily. It has an electronic beeping sound when your timer is complete or your bake temperature is reached. I wish it was a little louder. Otherwise the oven works great.

You have to run the self clean cycle the first time for over 3 hours as there is a strange odor from the oven when you use it each time.

I have had the range for a week and both the wife and I love it. The switch from electric to induction was the right move. I did purchase a 5 year extended warranty as the technology is new and did not want to take any chances.

Highly recommended, paid around $2200 for my range.

I purchased this range with the advantum 120 microwave oven.So far both items are wonderful.I enjoy using my stove top for the heat accuracy and speed. It heats rapidly with steel or iron pots and pans. You can use aluminum if you use a heat transfer disc. The oven is typical for this product and works well.

After looking at numerous reviews; including those at Amazon. I concur fully with the reviewer-" Meet Jane JetsonLove this Range" This George Jetson Loves it Too!

Made in USA; flexiblity of gas; energy efficent; oven retains heat.

My recommendation to all-take time to read the manual.

I agree the oven takes longer to eat up; but with convection on we got great homemade chocolate chip cookies and bread.Good looking range.

Yes we had to buy new cookware. All Clad D5 (non-stick and regular and made in USA); Swiss Diamond. But well worth it.

After 3 months still very happy.

Lock out control helps to clean control area; Al clad pots allow smaller diameter pot on 11 inch element; yes oven slow to heat up; but once it heats up it retains the heat in the range.

Used the probe-the way to roast! Followed directions and the chicken came out moist and done. No more worries about how long to cook; use the probe and the internal temperature you selected. Would like the probe cord longer but not critical.

It even survived an overflow in the oven. What a mess; had to use diluted de-greaser then activate the self-cleaning.

I love cooking on this range! I knew it was quick, but never realized clean up would beso easy with induction cooking. Some negatives include the hum during some cooking processes and a double griddle can not be used when cooking pancakes or french toast. Otherwise, the quickness of the burners and the even cooking is a dream.

Summit SWC530LBI Wine Cooler with Wooden Shelves and 36 Bottle Capacity - SWC530

Summit : SWC530LBI 24 Under-Counter Dual Zone Wine Cellar with 46-Bottle CapacityBought this unit based on looks and inferred quality, i.e. maker of commercial products. Unit does not hold consistent temperature. Regardless of what you set, it floats on its own depending on environmental temperature. While house is at 72-76, white wine side will not get below 50. Also noisy operation, much louder than regular fridge. Company support is non-existent. Have sent emails and service requests with no response. Looks great, but first priority is to actually hold temperature. And have no idea where you put the other 10 bottles above 36 shown, 6 bottles x 6 trays. Spend more, buy a name brand with a established service team.

fridge arrived well intact...I was surprised since I live in the mountains. Top shelf will not lock in place due to design flaw with shelf too long. Quite noisy compared to house refrigerator. Temp varies a bit but within a few degrees of setting. Large bottles will only fit on top shelf in white wine section.
