KitchenAid Artisan 5-Quart Stand Mixers

KitchenAid KSM150PSAC Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, Almond CreamMy wedding gift mixer (a Sunbeam Mixmaster) turned 33 a week before Christmas, and my husband thought it was time for me to have a new one.He gifted me on Christmas with the KitchenAid 5 Qt. Artisan in white.I love this mixer and leave it out on my counter, something I never did with the Mixmaster.I recently purchased the citrus juicer attachment from Amazon and am very pleased with it as well. I have not read all 109 previous reviews on this site, but I have read a few that were disgruntled because their Artisans did not mix well.I initially had the same problem with the beater/bowl clearance. It is very simple to remedy. There is a beater adjustment screw on the mixer and the manual describes how to make the adjustments.I got even better instructions by calling customer support at KitchenAid. The technician told me to drop a dime into the empty bowl, turn the mixer on (about setting 2) using the flat beater, and it should move the dime 1/4" to 1/2" each time it rotates around the bowl. This is the right clearance for the beater to mix everything at the bottom of the bowl, but not low enough to cause wear on the beater from constant friction with the bottom of the bowl during usage.I tweaked the screw setting 1/4 turn each time until I got that dime moving. At this setting, I can now beat a single egg white to stiff peaks in the 5 qt. bowl. That's impressive.

This mixer is as sturdy as a tank, and you can hear the quality as it mixes.Although I had previously purchased a KitchenAid mixer for my daughter as a gift, I would never have splurged on one for myself.I am so happy my husband thought I was worth it!

This KitchenAid mixer is an excellent investment! I just love mine! The dough hook attachment is the greatest invention ever. No more kneading! I used this wonderful machine to make 4 pounds of Pizza Geina dough without breaking a sweat. Add your ingredients, turn it on and it does the rest! It has a very powerful motor and every part of this mixer is excellent quality and well made. It is simple to lock in the mixing bowl and it is also a breeze to clean. The different attachments are very easy to attach and remove. It would be impossible not to love it! Did I mention how easy the clean up is?I love it so much I bought the KitchenAid quilted cover for it.Once you use this mixer you will never want to use anything else! The Best!!!

In short, don't be.Most of the relatively small percentage of negative reviews on this mixer fall into one of three explainable categories, so if you're considering it, follow along:

The most worrisome category of complaints about this mixer involves a very small number of stories about the food-grade grease that lubricates the internal bearings leaking out of the mixer and into the food-bowl.Although reported in only a tiny percentage of reviews, this was probably the one complaint that worried me the most, simply because if true, let's just say it:it's disgusting.

The first thing to keep in mind in evaluating this complaint is that EVERY electric mixer requires lubricated bearings.Changing models or brands won't change that, and although there may be design differences that make the possibility somewhat different across various models, it's just going to always be there to some degree on every mixer. It's pointless to waste time, in other words, worrying about something that is going to be a possibility on ANYTHING you can possibly buy.So that's the first category.

The second category category of complaints has to do with the mixer dying somehow, either arriving dead or dying quickly. It seems a lot of these complaints are dated from 2007-2009, so maybe there really *was* something going on, but those seem to have tapered off.For the rest, I can only say that speed matters:2=LOW for dough, 4=MED for batter, and 6=HIGH for creaming.Speeds 8 and 10 are ONLY for whipping air into cream or egg whites with the wire whisk.Anything faster than 2 for kneading dough and you're literally playing with fire.

I can say this with the authority that only comes from wrecking a lot of motors. The quickest way to burn out an appliance is to exceed the available power with the requested load, so the number one way to kill a mixer is to simply add a large quantity of sticky dough and then crank up the dough hook while saying "if 2 is good, then 4 is better and 10 is best."Turning up the speed increases the load, leaving the motor with no reserve capacity as the dough gets tougher. The result is easy to predict.

The second way to kill an electric motor, surprisingly (and you won't be warned about this one by the manual) is to use it with an extension cord, especially a light-duty one. This is the appliance equivalent of running a race while breathing through a straw. You don't run your stove that way, you don't run your refrigerator that way, and you shouldn't run your mixer that way, either.Even WITH the recommended amount of dough, and AT the recommended speed (2), you can still kill it this way.(Please see the comments on this review if you're interested in more discussion on this).

Anyone who is unaware of either of these points will naturally and understandably blame the mixer when it starts smoking and burns out.I'm certainly not saying one of these types of abuse explains every single case of mixer failure--there have to be SOME manufacturing defects--but I'd be willing to bet one of these two things explains 8 out of 10 of them.If you really do need a mixer for large quantities of dough every day, then please invest in a commercial-grade mixer like a twoto four-thousand dollar Hobart mixer, where the designers KNOW the duty-requirements you have in mind. You shouldn't try to haul two tons of rock with a half-ton pickup truck all day and expect it to last, nor should you make the equivalent mistake with a mixer.

The remaining category of complaints seems to be some version of the beaters hitting the bowl. This is a simple adjustment that has been covered elsewhere, but if you missed it, all you need to do is place a dime in the bowl and use the adjustment screw (in the crook of the tip-up hinge) to lower or raise the flat beater until it moves the dime just 1/4 to 1/2 inch on each sweep. This is only end-user adjustment you'll ever need to make, and it likely solves the entirety of the remaining category of complaints I read about.

I decided to take a chance on this mixer despite the negative reviews, after thinking it through in this way, and I'm very happy with it so far (and wow, is it ever better than the old Sunbeam stand mixer I had for ages!)If it ever quits or I change my mind about it, I'll let you know; otherwise, the deal on Amazon is as good as you'll find.(UPDATE:That last comment was made back when this mixer was selling for $229, but the price has risen dramatically since then. The rest of my review still stands...)

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) When I first started baking all my own breads, cakes, etc., from scratch, the books said that I needed a bread machine. I bought one and it didn't work so well with the GF "funny flours." A book finally told me to forget about the machine, buy a stand mixer and use the oven. Brilliant!

I bought my Kitchenaid and haven't looked back. I use this thing at least twice a week, sometimes every day. I don't know how I lived without it. My mom just bought one after she saw me calmly measuring stuff and dumping it in while the mixer mixed all by it itself. (She's been suffering with a handheld all these years.) Stand mixers also mix more thoroughly than handhelds. They also can mix chocolate chip cookie dough all the way to the end of the flour additions.

I've had my Kitchenaid for about 5 years now, though 3 moves, and it's still as sturdy and reliable as the day I bought it. The paint is still perfect. Not a scratch. Certainly not a chip. It's beautiful and lustrous. I have Onyx Black. While I like the look of the Onyx a lot, it's obvious if there's a little flour dusting the top of it. This makes it convenient to clean, but if you don't use it very often but do want it out, you might want to choose a lighter color that won't show dust.

Caveat: It's heavy. B/c I use mine so much, I display it on my counter, drag it forward, use it, wipe it off with a damp rag, and push it back. (And wash the bowl, of course.) But it's worth it's weight in gold. They are a lovely appliance. Not like a frumpy toaster.

Also, a previous review somewhere said that it left dry ingredients in the bottom of the bowl and didn't incorporate them. There's an adjustment screw that you have to fine-tune before you use it. Instructions are in the booklet. I adjusted mine before I used it for the first time (I compulsively read instructions,) and never had that problem.

Buy yourself a proper mixer. You'll be so glad you did.

First, the mixer works great.Everything most home-bakers could ever want. But I strongly suggest you select a smooth finish.I got the Krinkle Gray. (Don't know if thats still available.)It looks very 'professional', but it's hard to keep clean. After the first batch of bread dough, the mixer was nearly white, and it took some serious scrubbing to get the flour off the textured surface.

As to the mechanics of the mixer itself, very few complaints. The tilt-head makes it possible to remove the bowl without dismantling the beater (unlike the lift-bowl models).I mainly use the dough hook, and have found that the motor tends to bog down just a bit on extremely heavy doughs. But as I always do the final kneading by hand anyway, its not a major issue; just a little more hand work.

If I ever buy another stand mixer, it will definately be a KitchenAid.Thing is, this mixer will probably outlast me by decades.

I tried buying locally and it cost 1/4th as much . . . and was the wrong part! The parts person said this part isnt even listed as compatible with my fridge. But even with shipping, this part is cheaper here than it was at the local parts shop.I cant figure out why this chunk of plastic costs so much. But it works without the cap, I couldnt get the filter in all the way and my kids and I can all taste the difference.Oh, it also shipped so quickly that it was faster to get it from Amazon than it was to order from the local parts shop which is 5 miles from my husband's work and wait for him to find time to run and get it.

I agree with Justin's review, $22.00 for a 25 cent piece of molded plastic is an outrageous price. My new Whirlpool filter cap broke the first time I tried to change the filter. ( Yes, I read and followed the instructions.) This is a prime example why corporate executives rake in their multi million dollar bonuses.

Koldfront 32 Bottle Free Standing Dual Zone Wine Cooler - Black and Stainless Steel

Koldfront 32 Bottle Free Standing Dual Zone Wine Cooler - Black and Stainless Steel
  • Thermoelectric cooling; Dual zone; Control panel with LCD temperature display for both zones
  • Free-standing installation; Tempered glass door; Safety lock
  • Wooden shelving; Black cabinet, stainless steel door trim
  • Top zone temperature range: 54° to 66°F; Lower zone temperature range: 46° to 66°F
  • Dimensions: 33.5" H x 15.75" W x 22.5" D

The product isn't great, but the customer service was very good. The good is it does the job, and so far the wines we have had in the cooler were great.

The bad. This cooler has two settings, but it refuses to allow the bottom section to be warmer than 56 degrees, even with both settings as high as possible. The shelving isn't designed too well, as it's easy to pull the entire shelf out and have bottles fall to the floor. I would also note that French wines are too wide to fit 4 to a shelf, and will not fit height wise without taking out shelves (this isn't a product issue, but I wanted to throw it out there). It's an okay product, not amazing, but probably somewhat in line with the pricing.

We did a lot of research before purchasing this wine fridge. It is very quiet and keeps wine cooled accurately in both zones. The only negative is that the shelves are too close together, making it difficult to slide them in and out if a bottle is slightly over sized.

There is one problem with this cooler. If this design error has not happened it would be 5 Stars.

Here's the problem:

The shelves are too close together. So, unless the cooler is entirely stocked with narrow Claret style bottles, you end up having to cram/push the bottles in, spoiling the labels. If like me you have a mix of old world / new world wine and a variety of bottle shapes (including fatter Chardonnay bottles) then this product may be a problem.

Such a simple thing they should have thought of. Shame really. Otherwise 5 stars. And it's super quiet.

Supco RCO810 Hard Start Kit

Supco RCO810 Hard Start Kit
  • 115v
  • Includes relay, capacitor, and overload device
  • Totally pre-wired

My small freezer was not working and the compressor appeared to be OK.Using this item to replace the suspect start capacitor, overload, and start relay worked well, was easy to install, and reduced the possibility I was replacing the wrong component. The freezer is now running well for over a month.I would recommend this, so long as you know the size of the compressor to match it to the proper kit.

The only disadvantage is there is no good way to mount the kit, which isn't a significant problem.

This was one letter off from the model number on my broken one, but I crossed my fingers and clicked the "Place My Order" button. It arrived, and I took it to the kitchen to find out if I had solved my problem, or if I would be going through the cumbersome return process. Hooray!! It fits!! Now I can put my salad dressings back where they belong, instead of stuffing them in between the gallons of milk!

This fits perfect and is in perfect condition! You wouldn't think that a space so small in your fridge would make such a big difference in storage space but it does. I'm really glad I found this here for our fridge at a good price :)

My original tray door cracked and I used epoxy, which worked just fine to fix it, but eventually people put too much in there and it broke again. This tray did the job and I am happy! Got to make sure you don't put too much in there, it's especially bad when you try to force a bottle in or something.

It is a great refridgerator, but the ice maker is not creating enough ice. We've had a technician already replace the motor and it still isn't working properly. It will only make one tray of ice during an entire night.A tech will be back out in a couple days to try and fix it again. But if this doesn't finally resolve the problem, I'm swapping it out for a different model (non-LG).

Aqua Fresh WF287 Refrigerator Replacement Filter

Aqua Fresh WF287 Refrigerator Replacement FilterI purchased a 3 pack (not from Amazon) for use in my GE Profile refrigerator. The first one worked fine, but when it came time to replace it, the second one would not work. After installing the second filter I received no water through the dispenser.

First I thought something was wrong with the water line.I pulled out the fridge and checked water flow into the dispenser.Water flow was good.I then started thinking the water valve was broken, but it seemed curious to me that it failed exactly when I replaced the filter....so I tried putting the first Aqua Fresh filter back on.But again, no water.

Before I started replacing valves, I wanted to completely rule out the filter as potential cause so I put the bypass plug into the filter holder and water began to flow again.

At this point I'm thinking it must be the filter.I go to the local store plop down the the ridiculous sum of $43 for the GE brand filter, plug it in, and it works!I then compared the Aqua Fresh filter side by side with the GE brand and found that the diameter and construction of the socket inside the Aqua Fresh filter is different than the GE.The socket needs to be able to depress and hold a spring loaded valve underneath the filter holder in order for water to flow into the filter. However, the Aqua Fresh filter sometimes will not completely depress and hold the valve open when mounted. Some of them work, some of them don't.

Anyway, as much as I hate to admit it, I'm going to stick with the overpriced GE brand, seeking out the best deal I can get on Amazon.

This is an "after-market" product that costs about 1/3 less than the original name-brand replacement. When I received it, it seemed as if it could possibly be used.I suspected this b/c the label affixed to the filter had sort of "stretch" tears on it (the kind of tear from a twisting motion that might occur from torquing the product in or out).Besides that, there is a seal that goes on the very top which was present but not affixed, and the box seemed a bit dirty/smudged.I put the filter in after following the directions of filling it with water, etc., and I immediately noticed a strange taste in the water.I thought maybe I just needed to run it for a while, but the taste never went away.I kept it in for several weeks but both the water and the ice tasted weird.I contacted the company & they assured me it was brand new and offered to refund my money.I returned it to them & got a prompt refund, which was great (they were very responsive & pleasant to deal with). Then I purchased the name-brand part & the water tasted normal again (after running about a gallon through).I'm going to stick to the name-brand original part from now on.

I've purchased two of these now and both of them started giving the water a plastic taste after about a month.I'll gladly pay a bit more for a filter that actually lasts as long as it's supposed to.Definitely would not recommend purchasing these.

This is a generic water filter for different refrigerators, however, when we tried it in our GE side by side fridge the water dispenser stopped working. After getting a technician in to look at it we learned that for GE you really do need to get the GE specific water filter MWF.So don't waste your time with this one, spend the extra money on the specific filter to be on the safe side.

I have a Kenmore refrigerator that came with the house when we bought it back in 2006.It was brand new so I never bothered checking anything until last year when my drip pan kept overflowing.Turns out my refrigerator had a water filter and it needed to be replaced.Who knew?I never used the water dispenser but I did occasionally use the ice maker.Moral of the story is to change your water filter every six months to one year.I got almost 6 years out of my original filter before it started dumping water into my drip pan.I bought a similar filter last year and was still going strong a few weeks ago but I changed it anyway. The only thing I don't much care for about this filter is the "Made in China" label. When it's time to change again I will attempt to find a "Made in USA" filter.

Liebherr CS1640 30 Inch Bottom Mount Refrigerator

Liebherr CS1640 30 Inch Bottom Mount RefrigeratorBought our 30" CS1640 in July 2009 from an appliance dealer in Bellevue, WA, for the same amount advertised here on Amazon. We live in an unincorporated area 32 miles east of Seattle, Wa.

Likes:The height, style, overall appearance and accessibility inside the refrigerator are really great.

Dislikes:The refrigerator does not "cool" to the appliance temps that USA citizens are accustomed to. Everything stored in the refrigerator spoils in half the time that the problem occurs in US-manfuactured refrigerator/freezers.The ice maker produces minimal amounts of ice; has never filled the entire ice maker bin, as US oriented refrigerator/freezers do. In addition, 2 months ago, one week to the day after the 2-year warranty expired, the interior around the bottom freezer drawer began freezing up. At first, I didn't understand what was happening, then I discovered a full layer of thick ice build-up.That's when I contacted our dealer for a service call. That's when I learned that Liebherr controls all service calls from their service center in Scottsdale, Az.And that's when I experienced perhaps the poorest customer service I've ever had with an appliance, and I've been buying appliances for 40 years. Not only did the rep inform me (without benefit of a service call to analyze the issue)that my issue would not be covered by the warranty; she referred me to (3) service providers who are not licensed and bonded as businesses in the State of Washington. When I called back to get more providers, I was told they could not help me! And I bought this refrigerator because of Liebherr's commitment to the environment, promise of excellent service, etc.

Bottom Line:Had I known then what I know now, I would not have made an investment in this product.
