We like our GE "French Door" fridge. It looks good and works fine. But don't think of getting it without the insurance plan. We've had to replace the central "brain". We've had to replace a door latch. We are getting ready now to call for a new shelf and crisper track because both have broken.I would guess that without the insurance we would soon have put as much in repairs as we paid for the fridge. However, ours was a brand new model, and perhaps they have worked some of the bugs out. We love it. We really have no complaints. Just be sure you take the insurance when it's offered. And you can be sure we'll be renewing our policy when it expires. The service has been excellent.

We have had this fridge for less than 1 year and so far we have had the repairman out 3 times.This is the most tempermental fridge I have ever owned.The previous review is right do not even THINK about buying this without a service plan.So far it has frozen (and ruined) lots of produce.Once that got fixed the icemaker overflowed water into the bottom of the freezer (until I shut off the water).The spicket freezes where you cannot get water out of it (in the fridge) and you have to jack up the temperature just to get it to thaw so that you can get water from it again.When the guy was out last week he replaced the whole ice maker.Once he left it started making this horrible sound like it is trying to make ice or dump ice but cannot.So I'm waiting on them to come out AGAIN to fix that.HORRIBLE do NOT buy it.Ridiculous! We've had one of thse for about 6 months. Over this period the doors haven't been fully closed four times, and no-one heard the "door alarm" (in at least two cases it had mysteriously turned itself "off"). And guess what: the intense tungsten bright interior lights (indeed Edison's 125 y/o old discovery) remain on. These 2 high intensity bulbs dump at least 50 watts of heat into the interior for as long as the doors remain even slightly open. When discovered, the temperature indicator has shown the interior temp to be in the high 60 to 70degrees F,, 30 degrees below the "norm",40 degrees F.
First: in this day and age of cool lighting sources, in this high-priced box, what kind of idiot would specify such ancient lighting in a refrigerator -(quoting the owner's manual, "caution the light bulbs may be hot" hot enough to burn you within a few minute, I discovered). Ridiculous!!
As well, why is it even possible to turn off the so-called door alarm? it's barely audibleanyway, and delays three minutes (un-adjustable, of course!) before it begins to emit it's pathetic peep.Thus whoever left it open is long gone by then.

This is for anyone considering purchasing the G.E. brand.I bought a new house 4 years ago and the builder included all G.E. appliance for free.Refrigerator, microwave, stove top, oven, diswasher, washer and dryer.Beautiful Stainless steel new appliances.The dryer broke on day one and the builder replaced it.The dishwasher was recalled for starting fires, but worst of all has been the refrigerator.I've had it for slightly less than 4 years.It's a side-by-side but, but other than that, same thing as what's shown here.The inside drawers have broken, the ice maker leaks down the refrigerator and onto the floor, the temperature control does not control the temperature on either side and the freezer thaws intermittently and the food thaws (all this began in the fist 6 months) and yesterday both the refrigerator and the freezer gave out and stopped cooling.It still makes an excellent nightlight but other than that, it's useless.Oh and the ice maker gets clogged and then won't make ice. (that is, while it was still making ice in year 1-3) A little research on the net and I have discovered the motherboard breaks on these puppies and they stop cooling.Figure a $700 bill for that, and figure the new mother board will last you about 2-4 years before it breaks too. This is a pervasive problem. If you figure one in every 10 people who have this same problem with their G.E. Profile's, write a complaint on line, then it's pretty much... yeah, everybody whose had one for 4 years.The brand is made in Mexico and no offense to Mexicans but it sucks! You'll be lucky to get 2 or 3 years from this machine.A word of caution: When looking on line for reviews, do not just count the # of stars people have given it and make your mind up based on that, you have to read the actual reviews because most of the people writing the reviews do so within a month or two of getting their appliance--sometimes the day it arrives. What the heck use is that, I ask you?(this is true of all appliances) Of course they're satisfied with their purchase in the first month.Read reviews from people who have had the machine for YEARS and that will tell you something. Now I have to figure out what to buy next because I'm not even going to bother fixing this junk.UPDATE:I went searching for a new counter-depth, built-in fridg in stainless steel that would go with my gorgeous new kitchen and discovered anything counter depth (meaning it doesn't stick out in the room 6 inches beyond the counter like a giant cube) costs about twice as much as a regular depth fridge, and since there are no good brands made today left to buy--(they are all utter crap)I couldn't stomach paying a minimum of $2,000 for a unit that would last only a few years.Well, I decided to look on Craig's list for a used/older model counter depth, not sure if they even existed.I'm here to tell you, they do---I found 2 G.E. Profile counter depth refrigerators in my area on one night, which were at least 15 years old.They were in the price range of $75-150 and clean.I bought the one for $75 because it still looked new inside and was the right size, had well made drawers (heavy gage wire bins in the freezer), a lighted ice maker in the door that still worked, and NO COMPUTER running it.I took it home in December and I have had no problems with it, and if/when I do, if I repair it it will stay repaired because all the major problems with refrigerators today are associated with the computer brain.The same company makes mother boards for all the popular brands so they all have problems.The one I bought was almond in color, but I bought stainless steel contact paper at Loews (2 rolls, $14 dollars) and now you can't tell it's not stainless steel except for the ice maker on the front and the handles, but the overall impression is the same as the SS I had prior.It looks fine!The guy who sold it to me said he was the second owner and it has never given him a moment's trouble in 12 years.I think it must be about 17 years old.He just updated his kitchen and his wife wanted a new one---the same one I just got rid of!OMG, they are going to be soooo sorry in a couple of years.I hired a used refrigerator guy to move one out and the one from Craig's List in, and offered to pay him by giving him the 4 year old SS one I just got rid of, but he was very familiar with the new G.E. profiles and he only gave me $25 dollars for it.I had to pay $100 more for him to move them/ change them out.He says it's not really even worth $25!But so what, the whole thing out the door cost me $175, done and done.Anyone who doesn't want to spendthousands of dollars on a counter depth fridge (but still wants one) and is dead set against buying inferior products, and doesn't know what to do: Take my advice, either research/buy Fagor a european brand that you can get here at A.J. Madisons (it is the 5th largest selling appliance brand in europe and is getting rave reviews all over the world now. BTW they also make washer/dryers combos which you can buy on Amazon) also Summit is supposed to be a good brand.OR check out Craig's List and see if you can find a G.E Profile counter depth built in model that does not run on a computer brain.You may be in luck and trust me, once you get it home and it's running like a champ, you're going to be very proud of yourself.
