When our dryer started making grinding noises and chewing up clothes, my wife feared we would have to purchase a new one. Upon investigation I discovered the Whirlpool 3406129 Front Bearing and Seal for Dryer and Whirlpool Dryer Bearing Ring for Front Support 279441 were broken. I purchased the replacement parts on Amazon and completed the repair in under half an hour. We have since had no problems with our dryer.

n.b. I needed a TEKTON 2822 T-Handle Socket Screwdriver Set, 22-Piece to open the top and remove the front panel of our dryer. I also found a helpful video online demonstrating the repair.
